Have you tried the famous Tai Cheong egg tarts from Hong Kong yet?
An old style bakery in Hong Kong, Tai Cheong is over half a century old and well-known for its egg tarts. In fact the shop has become somewhat of a tourist destination in Hong Kong – with what is commonly believed to be the best egg tarts available in the country. In fact they are also supposed to be the former British Governor, Chris Patten’s, favourite egg tarts ever.
But if you haven’t had a chance to pay a visit to Hong Kong, but you would still like you get your hands on these delicious morsels, then you are in luck. That is because these famous egg tarts are now available in Singapore – and they are priced at $7.60 for a minimum order of four pieces.
Pop-up stall at Takashimaya Basement
Currently being sold at a pop-up store at the Takashimaya Basement Food Hall till 17 May, the Tai Cheong booth has been attracting rather long queues daily – with waiting times reaching up to an hour per session. In fact it has proven to be so popular – that yesterday, people even went to queue there even before the booth had opened its doors for business at 9am. It closes at 9pm daily.
We recently headed down to Takashimaya ourselves, to get our hands on the Tai Cheong egg tarts – to find out whether these goodies are really worth the hype.
When you queue up though, the wait is somewhat less boring to some extent as you get to see the various batches of egg tarts being prepared and baked in the oven right in front of you. I guess that in some way, this helps to get you worked up and excited about the egg tarts before you actually purchase them, so this is somewhat of a good marketing strategy.
How the egg tarts tasted
Regarding the texture of the actual egg tarts though, unlike most of the flaky style egg tarts in Hong Kong, these egg tarts are made with a buttery style base which is delicious.
The salty pastry shell balances out very well together with the sweet and creamy egg custard filling. When eaten warm and fresh out of the oven, the egg custard tart, tastes like pure heaven.
It is the perfect snack to eat when you have the craving for something light.
But are they actually worth one hour of queuing and about $1.90 per piece? I suppose that is a question that depends very much on personal preference.
