This Easter, Yio Chu Kang Stadium will see Rugby Sevens being played past midnight.
That’s because it is the venue for the Singapore Midnight Sevens by the Singapore Ruby Union. This is an open tournament for both men and women. Rugby fans can sign up in teams of 12 and compete from Thursday April 13, 7pm to Friday April 14, 1pm.
The final rounds will then be played on Good Friday, 3pm – 7pm.
Last time midnight rugby had been played in Singapore, was by the Blacks Rugby Football Club with local and overseas clubs participating.
Prizes
For the 2017 Singapore Midnight Sevens, prizes include $800 cash, one year of membership for Fitness First Gym for the whole team, and Pure Nutrition vouchers. A maximum of eight teams per category can take part and places are limited. To register, go to singaporerugby.com.
Said local actor and Singapore Rugby ambassador player Paul Foster, “It will be interesting to play rugby all the way past midnight. We usually play club rugby in the evenings but it will be memorable to play under the stars and all the way to the early hours of the morning. As it is a long Easter weekend with a holiday on Friday, I’m sure everyone will have a fun time playing in this interesting tournament.”
South East Asia Sevens to take place as well
The South East Asia Sevens also take place at Yio Chu Kang Stadium, from 9am – 7pm.
This is an important ancillary event to the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens, and registration for the South East Asia Sevens has closed with eight male teams and six female teams competing. The men’s tournament will feature two Singapore teams, as well as Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand, whereas for the female competition, it will consist of Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.
Final to be held at the National Stadium on 16 April
The final will be held on 16 April during the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens, at the Singapore National Stadium. Last year Singapore finished behind Thailand in both categories.
Said George Danapal, Singapore Rugby Union General Manager, “We are looking forward to an interesting week of rugby in Singapore. In addition to the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens, the Singapore Midnight Sevens and the South East Asia Sevens will provide local and regional players, as well as rugby fans, the chance to be better involved.”
He added, “Last year’s South East Asia Sevens was a great success and we can see how quickly the teams responded to the registration this year. We added the Singapore Midnight Sevens this year, to allow fans to compete in a friendly tournament. We hope that this shows the social side of rugby – as a sport that brings people together.”
