The fluffy donuts with a signature sugar glaze – have finally landed in Singapore.
Krispy Kreme, the American donut chain, with 550 stores in 24 countries (outside of the USA), opened its doors in Singapore yesterday – at the basement of Tangs in Orchard Road.
400 people queued up to get a taste of the donuts – myself included.

Saturday 12 October 2013
This magic date has been flashing all over Krispy Kreme’s website and Facebook page for several weeks now. The popular donut chain was finally opening its doors in Singapore.
Having tasted the fluffy Krispy Kreme donuts in Australia, this date was embedded well in my head and I was eager to be a part of the opening day queue on this rainy Saturday morning outside Tangs.
Prizes Galore
I arrived at about 10.15am, to join about 40 people standing in line in front of me outside Tangs. I waited for about 25 minutes before I was escorted in a small batch to the basement shop. (The escorting was done so that we would not be too much of a nuisance to other shoppers at Tangs).
There were plenty of prizes given away. The first three people in line, received a free supply of donuts for one year, six months and three months, respectively.
The fourth to 100th in the queue were also rewarded with one month’s free supply of donuts.
There were also goodie bags for the first 500 people in line – me included.
I may not have been fast enough to get my hands on the one year’s supply of free donuts, but I managed to pick up a Krispy Kreme goodie bag – so that was a consolation. This was a pretty good assortment of freebies inside, including a limited edition krispy kreme t-shirt, water, a packet of potato chips and sweet droplets and plenty of tissue packets.
Krispy Kreme staff was constantly egging on the passers by – to join the queue and telling them what they could gain – if they did so. Spin the wheel competitions and free photos were also available for those who bought three dozen and one dozen donuts, respectively.
Escorted in Small Groups
Those in the queue were escorted to the Krispy Kreme shop in small batches – and now my turn had come.
A staff member holding a sign saying “Follow me” motioned for a group, about ten of us, to follow him.
My mouth salivated at the mere thought of the donuts. It would be only moments before I would taste those heavenly morsels again.
Flavours Galore
After a couple of minutes walk, the Krispy Kreme shop was right in front of me. There was a mini queue at the shop, though.
I joined the back of the queue and waited eagerly for my turn.
A staff member was handing out an “order form” with a list of Krispy Kreme flavours available. When I looked at the flavours available, I simply wanted to buy everything! But I had to choose, because I knew that I would not be able to buy so many flavours. After all, I could always return to the shop again for more.
Another staff member was also dishing out complimentary samples of the Original Glaze donut – Krispy Kreme’s most famous flavour. This was the one that made them so popular, globally. We were given one each. I greedily gobbled it down within mere seconds. It was warm and absolutely yummy – just as divine as the ones I used to have in Australia.
Usually Krispy Kreme stores have a tradition of handing out free original glaze donuts to customers in line, as soon as a batch have come out of the oven – on opening day.
By then, the line was steadily moving along and there were about ten people in front of me.
My Selection
Finally it was my turn to purchase the donuts. I selected half a dozen of their flavours. These were the trademark original glaze, as well as the New York cheesecake, red velvet, vanilla cake, chocolate cake and cookies and cream.
These were packed conveniently into a small box for me. I took them home eagerly and could barely wait to share my donuts with my sweet-toothed family!
The donuts cost from $2.60 each, depending on the flavour that you buy.
