The sixth edition of the Singapore leg for the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is back next month, and will be taking place on Thursday 25 October at The Promontory @ Marina Bay.
Organised by Square Mile Sport and with Bloomberg as the headline sponsor, the race made its debut in London in 2007 and has grown into a global series now taking place in 11 major cities around the world.
Will feature more than 150 teams
A one of a kind, immersive team building experience, this will feature more than 150 teams from the city’s leading companies, with participants competing to win the coveted trophy and bragging rights as the fastest firm in the city.
Unlike other corporate races where runners compete against each other, the Bloomberg Square Mile is all about the TEAM where members take turns to run a one-mile (1.6km) lap, egging on and supporting their team mates to go as fast as possible.
Each team will comprise ten runners, and each runner will complete the one-mile course around the scenic The Promontory area.
Designed to promote team building
Said James Hassett, Managing Director of Square Mile Sport, “Designed to promote team building, a healthy work life balance and sense of camaraderie amongst colleagues, the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay has become a firm fixture in the corporate calendar with a truly international reach.”
He added, “To have sold more than 150 team places with a month to go is a fantastic achievement and this shows the huge appetite that the city has for competitive sport.”
2018 is set to be the biggest yet
The 2018 race is shaping up to be the biggest edition yet, with defending champions Macquarie aiming to retain their title for the sixth straight season.
But they will face a strong field from more than 100 companies, including Standard Chartered and GIC, whose teams had respectively finished second and third last year.
After the race, there will be a celebratory after-party where runners will be treated to a live DJ set and free food and drinks in the Race Village, to continue their corporate bonding session as well as to network with other participating organisations.
I remember taking part in the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay last year and it was plenty of fun, both in terms of the race as well as mingling together with my team mates at the after run party.
We all had such a great time that in fact, my team mates had even asked one another whether they should take part in the corporate race again.
Charity Element, The Extra Mile
For runners who want to run for a greater cause, the Bloomberg Square Mile Singapore has a charity element too, as the event organisers have also teamed up with the local development organisation SportsCares to harness the power of sport to address a key challenge truly unique to Singapore.
This is part of The Extra Mile, which is a community-led initiative by Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, and which addresses a unique social challenge in each city.
And under this initiative, runners can choose which cause to support, with a choice of the following causes:
- Bridging Inequality – helping at risk youths to change their lives through sport
- Promoting Inclusivity – Engaging persons with disability through sport
- Promoting good health and well being – Creating common spaces and
- curating activities to allow underprivileged youth to enjoy sports
And after making their choice, the relay community can then volunteer in an interactive and exciting activity that addresses the winning challenge and thus kicking off a yearlong support of The Extra Mile.
