We are about a week into 2019 now. So let’s take a look at some predictions of the the top health food trends that are expected to be making waves in this new year.
1) Seed Butters To Become Popular
For decades, peanut butter has been a mainstay of our pantry, and nut butters like almond, macadamia and cashew nut butters have popped up in recent years.
Now in 2019, seed butters are expected to explode on our supermarket shelves, including sunflower, pumpkin and watermelon seeds.
These new options will continue to offer the same health benefits as nut butters such as being high in good fats and Omega-3 fatty acids, yet at the same time, they will be a go-to choice for those who may be allergic to nuts.
2) New Alternatives to Coconut Water
In the past few years, Coconut Water has taken the world by storm as a healthy alternative to ordinary water.
Come 2019, alternatives to coconut water should be hitting our supermarket shelves, such as Maple Water which contains less sugar than its coconut counterpart, and Cactus Water, which is supposed to offer skin revitalisation benefits.
3) Probiotics Take Over Our Pantry
Probiotics, which are commonplace in yoghurt based products such as Yakult and Vitagen and fermented foods like kimchi, have been touted for years as a great way to increase the good bacteria in our gut.
But in 2019, probiotics may be found in much more than dairy products and fermented foods; this is because more health and wellness brands may be adding healthy probiotics to pantry staples such as granola, oatmeal, nut butters and energy bars.
4) Jackfruit To Become Popular
A native fruit to South East Asia and also grown in places like South America and Africa, Jackfruit has been used as a meat substitute for the past few years now, replacing barbecued pulled pork.
And in 2019, the popularity of Jackfruit will be set to explode more, with its high contents of iron, calcium and Vitamin B. It is also low in saturated fats. However, be careful about completely replacing meats with Jackfruit, though, because it is quite low in proteins.
5) Faux Meat On The Rise
This 2019, Faux Meat products such as Mushroom “Bacon Chips” and Mushroom Based “Soya-Based Jerky” will be on the rise, replacing meat based snacks such as pork rind and beef jerky.
However while these are nutritious options, do be careful about completely using them as meat substitutes, as they are fairly low in proteins.
6) New Types Of Ice Cream Bases
Banana soft serve ice cream has been around for several years and dairy-free ice cream alternatives have been introduced into supermarkets by several major players in the industry already, such as Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs, now.
And these have proven to be great alternatives to ice cream, allowing those who are lactose-intolerant to indulge in these sweet, creamy treats.
But in 2019, ice cream brands may be taking things up a notch, by experimenting with new types of bases such as avocado, hummus and tahini, to produce more nutritiously-dense yet still great-tasting ice cream flavours.
However whether these will match up to the original ice creams, only time will be able to tell, I suppose.
7) Tropical Fruits To Get Popular
For those who are getting tired of the “standard” fruits like apples, oranges and pears, here is some good news. That’s because more “exotic” tropical fruits such as dragonfruit, passionfruit and starfruit are expected to become more popular this 2019.
Conclusion
Looking at these new health trends, I can definitely say that we are in for a very exciting 2019 ahead.
What do you think? Do you too, feel that these trends will take off, and how do you feel about them? And which one/s would you say that you are looking more forward to, in particular?
