Iconic Green Run at Rail Corridor Makes Comeback as a Virtual Event

Formerly known as the Green Corridor Run, the PUB Green Run is back, after a four-year hiatus, as a virtual event with a purpose – to fund the rewilding of the Rail Corridor and to support the nation’s sustainability drive.

Supported by PUB

PUB supported the event during its 2015 and 2016 editions, both of which were held in conjunction with Singapore World Water Day to promote water conservation. This year, they are coming on board as the event’s main partner.

24km long nature trail

A 24km long nature trail route along the Keretapi Tanah Melayu railway line connecting Singapore and Malaysia, an annual run was held at the site from 2013 – 2016, selling out each year and attracting 12,000 runners at its peak.

I took part in the original Green Corridor Run and I really enjoyed my experiences there. It was one of the events that I always used to look forward to.

The southern stretch of the corridor was closed for the construction of an underground 22km water pipe to meet water demands in the city center.

The 2021 event and categories

For the 2021 event, participants will be allowed to complete the virtual run at a time and location of their choosing from 18 September – 31 October. There is a 3km family run category and a 10km category for more seasoned runners.

The 3km category is priced at S$42 and the 10km category at S$46. Participants under the age of 18 will receive a 10 per cent discount.

Participants can sign up for the run here.

Said Ben Williams, Director, PUB Green Run, “From the first moment I stepped onto the Rail Corridor, I was captivated by this unique stretch of greenery that cuts through the entire length of urbanised Singapore, mostly uninterrupted by roads. As the years have passed, my appreciation for the Rail Corridor continued to grow.”

Using the race app

Runners are required to use the PUB Green Run app to record their route and timing and are encouraged to run in open spaces and park connectors.

Runner entitlements

As part of their race entry, participants will also receive a premium running cap and a uniquely designed eco-friendly finisher’s medal made of bamboo, featuring PUB’s twin mascots Water Wally and Sally.

Said Chong Mien Ling, Chief Sustainability Officer, PUB, “at PUB, we are conscientiously practising environmentally friendly habits such as reducing water wastage as well as single-use plastics, increasing solar energy usage and supporting more tree planting, with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint.”

Continued Chong, “This eco-friendly virtual run extended from PUB’s commitment towards creating a Sustainable and Green Singapore.”
