The Durian Bakery began with a vision to provide the best durian culinary experience in Singapore, guided by a passion for durians.

Only the best, premium ingredients and best recipes are used, to create their bakes, which range from durian infused cakes such as mille crepes, black forest, eggless, ice cream, chocolate and cheese cakes, to patisseries such as durian puffs, melt-in-the-mouth mochi, and more.

Every single one of their bakes comprise their signature durian puree, SilkyGold™,  which will introduce you to a world of new and rich durian flavours that will leave you yearning for more. It is indeed a feast for durian lovers.

Collaborating with the durian bakery

The Durian Bakery recently reached out to me to collaborate on a review and I accepted the offer.

I ended up going for the following items.

Bakes were delivered punctually

The bakes were delivered quickly and promptly, well within the date and time slot which had been arranged. They arrived chilled and were put into the fridge immediately upon arrival.

Opening up the boxes, the cake had arrived together with a birthday card, candles and a spatula. I wondered for a moment, whose birthday I was celebrating.

Trying the bakes

Out of all the items, my favourite was easily the Dark Choco MSW Mousse.

This is described on the website as consisting of savoury dark chocolate mousse with fresh Musang King durian pureed and whipped into a thick creamy texture.

I really enjoyed t he combination of flavours and textures in this dessert. On the first bite, strong, rich chocolate flavours come out, but on subsequent mouthfuls, the chocolate fades away, giving rise to strong durian notes which attack your taste buds.

The crunchy biscuit base was a nice touch, adding a crispy texture to the cake. The contrast of crispy biscuit with the soft, melt-in-your-mouth mousse went together very well.

I really enjoyed the complexity of flavours and textures and my only gripe about this cake was that it was a little small. I really should have ordered more of this!

For the Snowy D24 Durian Mochi, as the name suggests, this is squishy mochi consisting entirely of a soft core of D24 durians.

I found this very pleasant and enjoyable to eat. They are bite-sized and you can easily pop a whole piece into your mouth. It is easy to take and eat when the mid-afternoon munchies strike.

The strong durian notes hit you immediately when you bite into it. The texture is very smooth and the mochi is soft, melt-in-your-mouth gooey and reminded me somewhat of ice cream.

It is an enjoyable and flavourful taste bomb that arrests the taste buds in a good way, without being overwhelming.

As for the Super Burst MSW Giant Puff, this dessert, as the name comprises, consists of light airy choux puff pastry filled with a luscious and decadent durian filling, made using entirely of MSW durian, according to the website.

When the puffs arrived, my first thought was, why is the puff so big. I knew prior to deliver that these puffs are bigger than your standard sized cream puff or durian puff, but I guess the sheer size still took me aback.

I would say that this is at least three times the size of a normal puff.

Durian notes literally ooze out of the puff as you draw near it.

Taking a bite, the durian flavour here is very intense and strong – that is clearly the selling point of the puffs. I can tell that it is indeed 100% durian puree used and will certainly satisfy those who want a strong durian kick in their pastry.

In terms of the quality of the durian puree, however, the puree in some puffs was a little more fibrous compared to other puffs and gave a rough mouth feel.

The pastry too, left a lot to be desired. It is harder and rougher than I would have liked.

I felt that the rough texture of the pastry did not really match well with the durian puree.

Perhaps the recipe could be tweaked so that the puff pastry is smoother and softer in the future.

Last but not least, the Mao Shan Wang Durian Mille Crepe Cake 8”, which is the bakery’s signature cake, comprises of 20 layers of thin handmade crepe skin with 5 layers of 100% pure durian puree with chunky durian flesh in the core.

This is described on the website as a rich and creamy Durian Mille Crepe cake that’s layered with the bakery’s signature MSW SilkyGold™ Durian Puree, blended through a special process to make it extra creamy and decadent.

This cake is moist, light and creamy, and full of flavour, without being cloying or overwhelming.

I felt that the amount of durian puree used was just right. The durian used is smooth and decadent and the durian taste was definitely apparent, but at the same time, it does not overpower the cake.

I felt that the durian to cream ratio was very balanced and went very well together. It is simple and classy, and it just works, in terms of the flavour profile.

However, in terms of the crepe skin, I felt that this was a tad on the rough side, especially with regards to the top outer layer. Perhaps this could be refined and tweaked, in order to improve the mouth feel of the dessert further.

Conclusion + where to buy

In terms of their unique selling point, I have to say that The Durian Bakery definitely does live up to their promise of selling flavourful durian desserts that are infused with a strong durian kick.
