The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) is back in its true form for the first time since 2019, with a mass start and road race format.
First mass post-pandemic running event
The 2021 event saw 4,000 runners flagged off in waves of 50, with three runners moving off every 10 seconds to ensure safe distancing.
As well, only 5km, 10km and relay categories were held as in-person races to minimise the participant numbers.
With events in Singapore now reopening and returning to full capacity, the 2022 race is expected to attract 50,000 runners over two days, 3rd and 4th December.
The half marathon (21.1km) and full marathon (42.195km) events will take place again, catering to more runners than ever.
A full-scale race in 2022
Said Jeff Edwards, Managing Director of Asia for the IRONMAN GROUP, “After SCSM 2021, we have been constantly monitoring the status of the pandemic in Singapore while working closely with Sport Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, Standard Chartered bank and all other stakeholders to determine the format for 2022.”
He continued, “With the restrictions easing, we are delighted to be able to organise an event that our runners have grown to love year after year.”
Safe management measures and road closures
Safe management measures will be in place to safeguard participant health and safety and in line with pre-pandemic editions. Significant road closures will be expected – to give runners an enjoyable experience through the city centre again. More details on the road closures will be announced in due course.
The 5km and 10km will take place on Saturday morning while the marathon and half marathon take place on Sunday morning. Details about the Kids dash, race routes and expo will be announced in due course.
The Double Up Challenge
Runners who want to push themselves further can sign up for the Double Up challenge, where they take part in two races – either a 5km or 10km on Saturday followed by a half or full marathon on Sunday. They will receive three medals – their respective finisher medals as well as a Double Up Challenge medal.
Said Lim Teck Yin, Chief Executive Officer, Sport Singapore, “Running has featured as one of Singaporeans’ most popular physical activities over the years, with more people taking it up in the past two years.”
He continued, “The welcome return of a full-scale SCSM will, once again, bring new and experienced runners, families and friends together to challenge themselves, train and bond towards a year-end goal. This not only reaffirms our commitment to bring mass participation events back, but also to grow and engage the local running community, providing a world-class stage for Singaporeans to race alongside one another.”
A brand new logo
Also unveiled by SCSM as a brand new logo to celebrate the return of in-person racing, as well as representing the roots of this long-standing event.
The logo consists of two significant Singapore icons, the Merlion and the Orchid. The Merlion celebrates its 50th birthday this year and signifies the event’s position as a big-scale city race.
The Orchid, Singapore’s national flower, symbolises hardiness and resilience by defying limits and boundaries – akin to running a marathon.
