Food Review: Trying Shakey’s Famous Thin-Crust American Pizzas, Chicken and Mojos

Shakey’s Pizza was the first-ever pizza chain in the United States.

Originally founded in 1954, the brand is over 70 years old today and with more than 500 stores in California and Washington, as well as outlets in in Japan and the Philippines.

The famous pizza brand arrived on Singapore shores last year, bringing their famous thin-crust pizzas to Singaporeans.

Takes pride in their pizzas

Shakey’s Pizza takes pride in their thin-crust pizzas using dough made from scratch with their own special recipes to ensure a distinct flavour and maintain high quality and freshness.

The crisp crust, together with the flavourful pizza toppings, ensures a delightful experience for pizza lovers everywhere.

Besides their pizza, other popular items at Shakey’s are their fried chicken and trademark mojos, the latter being slices of potato coated with an in-house batter.

Tasting the pizzas

We were recently invited to a media tasting session at Shakey’s Pizza. We enjoyed a Regular Pizza, as well as their chicken and mojos.

Here are my thoughts and comments on the food and how it fared.

Pizza

We went for the Shakey’s Special (S$21.60) which consisted of beef (Italian beef), beef pepperoni, beef salami, mushrooms, green bell peppers and onions. This was a fully loaded pizza with lots of toppings.

I have to say that I enjoyed the pizza. It was one of the better pizzas I’ve tried.

The crust itself was fragrant and light, with the crust being crunchy throughout. Sometimes pizzas may be soggy in the centre and only crunchier towards the edges so it was great that Shakey’s had no such issues.

The toppings were flavourful. There were slight spice notes coming from the salami, which really brought out the flavours. I really enjoyed the combination of flavours and textures. The assorted myriad of meat items and vegetables blended in well together, all contributing towards this being one of the more tasty pizzas I have tried.

I definitely enjoyed this pizza, but if you’re sharing this with a friend, the Thin Crust Regular (9”) may be a tad on the small side unless both of you are small eaters. Instead, I would probably recommend that you go for the Large size (12”).

Chicken ‘N’ Mojos

Besides the pizza, we also tried Shakey’s fried chicken & mojos.

Chicken

The deep-fried chicken was juicy, tender and flavourful. It was definitely one of the better fried chickens I’ve had. We were given the back portion of chicken. The meat was soft, moist and juicy and the skin was light, fragrant and crunchy.

The chicken is served with a chicken gravy which had a delicious savoury, salty note that I really enjoyed.

Mojos

For the mojos, this is served with a choice of either cheese or caesar sauce.

The mojos are quite soft and plain and don’t appear to have any flavour on their own, so it is absolutely necessary to dip them into the sauce when you eat them. It would help if they could have been flavoured with some herbs and a bit of salt.

Both sauces are quite nice. The cheese sauce is mild and while the cheesy note is apparent, it is not strong and the subtle cheesy hints go well with the mojos without drowning out the original taste of the potato. It is a good pick for those who want some flavour, but not too much.

For the caesar sauce, this has a much stronger flavour. The tangy notes are immediately apparent, along with some mild spice notes. If you like strong flavours, then this is the sauce for you. Considering the mojos on their own don’t have much taste, this sauce will really help to bring some oomph to the mojos.

Beverages

To round off our meal, we were served a choice of soft drinks. We picked a Fanta Grape and a Minute Maid orange juice. Other drinks available on the menu included Coke, Sprite and Iced Lemon Tea.

That said, I did think that the provision of some hot drinks such as hot milo, coffee and hot tea would have brought a welcome extension to the beverage menu.

Conclusion

If you are in the mood for a quick yet decent pizza meal, Shakey’s Pizza is a good choice, with pizzas bursting with flavour and paired together with their light and delicious crust. I would definitely be back if I am in the Orchard Road area and am craving for a good, quick pizza.
