This weekend, the inaugural Summer Sports Jam will be taking place at the Singapore Sports Hub.
Currently being held at the Sports Hub’s OCBC Square from 10am – 8pm on 13 and 14 July, this event is the Singapore Sports Hub’s first summer-themed Community Play Day and will feature a series of innovative workouts catering to the whole family.
My Media Preview
The Singapore Sports Hub invited me to a Media Preview of the Summer Sports Jam, where I got to try out some of the activities that will be on offer this weekend.
Jumping® Fitness
After a quick introduction, our preview session started with the Jumping® Fitness, which was an intense aerobic rebounding workout led by instructors and consisting of bouncing on mini trampolines – in time to the upbeat and catchy songs.
Originally coming from Czech Republic, this Jumping® Fitness session at the Sports Hub is led by JUMPING® SINGAPORE, who are Singapore’s No. 1 jumping workout providers.
I would say that the session had been great fun, but at the same time, it was very strenuous and left me panting and catching my breath after just the first song.
And the state that I was in was a huge contrast to the instructors, who were a bundle of energy and didn’t even seem tired, by the end of our 15-minute taste of Jumping® Fitness.
So I would say that this is definitely a great way to get fit in an entertaining way – if the standard workout routines don’t interest you.
Giant Bucket Pong
The second activity that we tried out was the Giant Bucket Pong, which would be a part of the Super Sports Day challenges for families.
And the Giant Bucket Pong had turned out to basically be a kid-friendly version of the popular Beer Pong party game, where players are supposed to throw a ping-pong ball across the table with the intent of landing it into a cup of beer at the other end.
But in this case, we used basketballs instead of ping-pong balls, and the six buckets were empty. Nonetheless, the goals were similar, that is, to get a ball into each of the buckets in order to win the game.
Targeted at both kids as well as adults, this game may look easy at first glance, but I found this to be surprisingly difficult, and it took several tries before my team-mate and I were able to conquer all of the six buckets.
Registering to play this also includes giving you plenty of other fun sporting challenges and also a chance of solving mysteries at various stations around the Sports Hub too, as part of the Super Sports Day.
Red-X Challenge
The third activity that we had a go at during the preview was the Red-X challenge, which was a CrossFit style functional fitness challenge that comprised of four stations – these are powerlifting, box-jumps, chin-ups and rowing.
And in order to pass this challenge, visitors are required to complete all the stations in chronological order.
From my experiences at this, I would conclude that those who are into strength training will find this easy, but the rest of us mortals would probably struggle. Fortunately there were no mandatory burpees for failure… unlike the rules during Spartan races!
Pool Football
The final activity that we tried out was Pool Football and as the name suggests, this was football played in with an inflatable wading pool being used as the football field. During the media preview, we formed two teams of three each and tried our hands at the game.
And it turns out that Pool Football is so much harder to play than the actual thing!
For starters, the inflatable pool that we were in, was rather slippery and it took several tries to get the hang of kicking the ball because of the insane challenges created by the water. So unsurprisingly, it was also tough to run or sprint with the ball due to this.
As such, everyone was very cautious at the beginning, but once someone fell into the water, the play began to get rougher and more aggressive. Nonetheless, it was great fun though and I’m sure that we all enjoyed ourselves throughly.
The Pool Football is a part of the Summer Sports Jam’s Football Fun activities – held in celebration of the Singapore Football Festival.
Besides the activities that we had experienced, visitors will also be able to boogie the afternoon away at the Summer Spin Jam which is a series of DanceFit workouts led by a DJ and instructor, or to feel “young-at-heart” with the Splash-N-Dash, which is a water-play area consisting of several obstacles and inflatables.
And as well, there is also a Sports Development Series: Duathlon Introduction Clinic to learn more about competing in a Duathlon too.
Activities are free and open to the public
Registration for all activities are mostly free of charge and all are open to the public this weekend.
And as well, participants of the events will also earn summer rewards and stand a chance to bring home a limited-edition Summer Sports Pack worth $30, while stocks last.
