To celebrate Singapore’s birthday, all of the BURGER KING® outlets across Singapore have introduced two new items, the Double Rendang Beef Burger and the Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger.
BURGER KING® first arrived on Singapore shores in 1982, with the opening of a restaurant at Peninsula Plaza. Today the fast-food chain not only operates 42 outlets in Singapore, but is also the second-largest fast food chain in the world, serving more than 11 million guests daily in 89 countries and territories worldwide.
And according to BURGER KING® Singapore, the new Double Rendang Beef Burger delivers a hearty bite of the double flame-grilled beef patties topped with the signature rendang sauce and fresh onions served in between two halves of a toasted sesame seed bun.
As well, this Rendang recipe is also offered in another one of the BURGER KING® signatures too, the TenderGrill™ chicken thigh patty. And according to BURGER KING®, the aromatic rendang sauce is supposed to be known to make diners crave for more of the delight.
And on the other hand, the Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger is described as holding a flame-grilled chicken thigh patty generously layered in both savoury ginger sauce as well as garlic chilli for a flavourful kick and it is then topped with lettuce and tucked in between toasted sesame seed buns.
These two new burgers are based on two of Singapore’s most cherished dishes: These are the distinctively rich-tasting rendang and the enduring delicacy that is Hainanese Chicken Rice, the latter widely seen as being one of Singapore’s national dishes.
Went down to BURGER KING® to eat the new burgers
My appetite whetted by the sound of these two new burgers, I headed down to the Paya Lebar branch of BURGER KING® Singapore, in order to try out both burgers.
I had bought this as a take-away order so that I could share the new burgers with my family too.
Instead of having two separate meals, I had decided to get the burgers as part of the BURGER KING® Combo Meal for Two – which consists of two burgers, one packet of French Fries, four Mexican Drumlets as well as two cups of Coca Cola Zero. Every purchase of this meal will set you back by S$17.90.
BURGER KING® Got My Order Wrong
However I was disappointed though – this was because even though I had actually asked the BURGER KING® counter staff for one Double Rendang Beef Burger and one Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger, I got back home… only to find that I had apparently been given a Rendang TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger instead of the Double Rendang Beef Burger, the latter which I had really been looking forward to trying out for myself.
Unfortunately because I had already reached home when I unwrapped the burger, I had been unable to take the burger to the shop to return it and request to get a replacement for the Double Rendang Beef Burger. So I had been stuck with my wrong order.
Sauce Was Leaky
I must also add that when I had reached home, the sauce from both burgers had leaked out and went all over the burger wrapping paper, as well as the inside of the brown paper bag that they had been packaged into. As a result, some of the sauce had got onto the French Fries as well.
The paper that was supposed to have wrapped the burgers was soaked through by the Rendang sauce and somehow messed up the other burger, fries and the brown paper bag, as a result.
So I think that it would have helped instead, if BURGER KING® could improve their packaging for the two new burgers, for example, from a paper wrapper to a cardboard box instead.
Trying Out the New Burgers
And as for the taste of the burgers, the Rendang TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger was not what I had been expecting, though. The generous amount of Rendang sauce in the burger, was hot and spicy and I could not really detect any other flavours coming out from it, besides the spicy note.
At least the flame-grilled chicken meat had been juicy and tender though, so this had helped.
However I had felt that the burger bun had quite soggy too, thanks to the generous amount of Rendang sauce that had been put inside the burger.
But I did find myself wondering whether the Double Rendang Beef Burger would have been nicer than the chicken variant, though.
So maybe next time I am ordering take-aways from BURGER KING®, perhaps I should actually open and unwrap the burgers at the store to double-check them, before heading back home.
And as for the Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger, this too, was not exactly what I had been expecting either. Upon biting into the burger, I could taste a lot of the savoury ginger sauce but not the real chicken rice flavoured sauce.
I could not really detect any of the garlic chilli sauce that is typically served with standard Hainanese chicken rice, even though the BURGER KING® advertisements say that the burger is actually supposed to contain this.
And as with the Rendang burger, the bun for the Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger bun was also a tad soggy for my liking because there had been a lot of ginger sauce on the burger.
Besides the BURGER KING® Combo Meal for Two, the two burgers can also be bought as part of a Value Meal for S$7.95 each and this includes a Medium pack of thick-cut salted French Fries, and a small Coca-Cola Zero.
Both the Double Rendang Beef Burger and the Hainanese TenderGrill™ Chicken Burger will be available at all BURGER KING® stores across Singapore, for a limited time, while stocks last.
Teh Tarik Pie
Besides the two burgers, BURGER KING® Singapore has also introduced a limited-edition Teh Tarik Pie, which has been inspired by our favourite local prata shop beverage of the same name.
When I saw the Teh Tarik Pie on the menu, I had been intrigued because I was wondering how BURGER KING® would create an edible version of this familiar drink.
Biting into the Teh Tarik Pie though, I was pleasantly surprised because it was actually quite nice. On tasting the pie, I could detect the aroma of fragrant milk tea.
And I had thought that the Teh Tarik sweetness and flavour had been quite authentic in the pie, and indeed reminded me of the prata shop Teh Tarik too. The texture had been similar to Teh Tarik infused custard.
As for the pastry shell, this had been still warm and crunchy when I ate it, which I had thought was good. And the crispy shell, combined with the smooth, molten Teh Tarik flowing inside, definitely made for an interesting combination that I think Teh Tarik fans would definitely enjoy.
Each Teh Tarik pie would set you back by S$1.00.
