Brings the concept of nature closer
Boasting a luscious event space that brings the concept of nature into an urban setting, Canopy has now opened their third outlet, this time in the Eastern part of Singapore at Changi City Point.
The new restaurant is large enough for big family gatherings or corporate events and features a tapas menu as well as a great selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free offerings for working professionals at the nearby Changi Business Park.
Trying Canopy’s tapas and vegetarian dishes
Canopy invited members of the media and influencers to their Changi outlet ahead of the restaurant’s official opening, for us to try a selection of their tapas menu and vegetarian dishes.
I must say that I was quite impressed by the greenery and the sheer number of plants adorning the restaurant space. It is beautiful and tasteful. The vibe and feel does not resemble a shopping mall at all.
In terms of the food offerings, the dishes that we tried, and my thoughts/comments on them, are as follows:
Kale Salad With Burrata Cheese (Vegetarian)
This dish comprises of kale, fig, burrata and cherry tomatoes, topped with balsamic dressing.
The whole ensemble goes together very well. Kale was a good choice of vegetable. The burrata cheese added a creaminess to the dish and the balsamic dressing provided a nice tangy note to boost your appetite.
Grilled Octopus Leg
The octopus is prepared with parsley oil and smoked red pepper sauce on a bed of mashed potatoes.
This was one of my favourite items in the tasting session. The octopus was very enjoyable to eat. The texture was akin to a softer version of calamari, with a delicious, slightly charred note. The mashed potatoes complemented the dish very well too.
Cauliflower Steak (Vegetarian)
This comprised of roasted cauliflower served with romesco sauce and parmesan cheese.
When this dish arrived, the first thing that my nose picked up was the smell of truffle.
The cauliflower had a slight crunchy texture, and this dish had a very complex myriad of flavours that I found pretty challenging to place. But truffle was not one of them.
Prawn Al Aljillo
This comprised of sautéed prawns in olive oil, garlic and chilli.
This was very pleasant and enjoyable to eat, with a mix of savoury, slightly spicy and mildly herbal notes combining together very well.
Salted Egg Chicken Burger
This burger comprised of grilled chicken meat with salted egg yolk sauce and topped with red onions, tomatoes and rocket salad, served in between a sesame potato bun. It is served with French fries on the side.
The chicken meat here is juicy and moist. The salted egg yolk sauce is subtle and mild. The buns are very soft.
The fries are tasty and addictive, with a slight hint of paprika flavouring. They keep their shape well, even after they have been left sitting around for a while.
Crispy Fried Tofu Skin Chicken (Vegetarian)
This dish is tofu skin seasoned with herbs and spices and served with truffle aioli.
It is a dish that really fools the mind. They look like chicken nuggets at first glance. When cutting into them, the texture appears to resemble chicken. And when I took a bite, the mouthfeel is like chicken nuggets with a firm tofu texture.
If I didn’t know from the beginning that this was tofu, I would have told you that they’re chicken nuggets.
Mushroom Burger (Vegetarian)
This comprises of a mushroom patty served with pickled onions, tomatoes, truffle aioli and rocket salad, in between sesame potato buns. It comes with a side serving of French fries.
The bun and fries in this dish are identical to those that come with the salted egg yolk chicken burger.
When I took a bite of this burger, I was a bit confused: The burger has a meaty mouthfeel to it. While there seem to be snippets of mushroom and there are mushroom notes in the patty, it really does seem more like a meat burger.
The mushroom patty holds together very well. This left me wondering what type of mushroom they had used.
Spinach Ravioli with Truffle Sauce (Vegetarian)
This dish comprises of spinach and ricotta cheese filled ravioli served with truffle cream sauce and topped with parmigiana cheese.
When the dish arrived at the table, my first impression was that the truffle smell is very prominent.
It is a rather rich dish that quickly feels jelak. This dish is best when shared. The ravioli consists of very strong cheesy notes that compete against an intense truffle flavour for the attention of the taste buds.
Conclusion
Dining at Canopy is definitely all about indulging in the comfort of surrounding nature, amidst good food and good company. The food is delicious and yummy and I have to say that I would definitely be back, be it with family or friends.
