8 Durian is an online durian delivery service in Singapore which pride themselves in providing their customers with quality, premium, fresh durian harvested from a Pahang high mountain plantation.
Durians are plucked from trees that are 15 years and older and the durian trees are from their own private plantation, not an overcrowded plantation.
Freshly plucked, de-husked and packed for freshness
According to 8 Durian, their durians are freshly plucked and arrive daily in Singapore before noon, where they are then de-husked and hygienically packed into boxes to ensure ultimate freshness, before being delivered to their customers on the day of their arrival.
Besides their standard delivery options, there is also a one-hour express delivery option as well as free same-day delivery for orders more than $100. Durians are also priced affordably.
With rave reviews and compliments from customers on the 8 Durian website, what more could my family and I ask for, in terms of getting our hands on some premium durians in Singapore.
Navigating their website and ordering
Navigating through the 8 Durian website is quite easy and the appearance of the website is simple and uncluttered. So far, so good.
There are four types of durian available for sale on the 8 Durian website and these are as follows.
- Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘AAA Grade’- Pahang High Mountain Plantation ($23.50/kg)
- Premium Black Gold Durian – Pahang High Mountain Plantation ($27/kg)
- Musang King 15 Year Tree Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘A Grade’ ($21/kg)
- Penang Red Prawn – Authentic Origin Well-Aged 15 Year Tree ($15/kg)
However when trying to actually place our order, I quickly realised one thing. The durians sold out very fast.
I had been trying to place my order for more than a week, and in most cases when I had checked, there had been only two types of durians available.
So at the first opportunity when I saw three durians available, I quickly decided to place the order.
These were the Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘AAA Grade’, Premium Black Gold and the Penang Red Prawn.
I admit that I had been eyeing the Musang King 15 Year Tree Premium Mao Shan Wang but as I had not been able to get this (out-of-stock), I decided to go with ordering the Penang Red Prawn instead.
Delivery of durians
I ordered the durians for delivery last Monday, choosing the time slot between 4pm – 8pm.
The durians arrived at 7:30pm with each package clearly labelled according to the type of durian contained in it.
The delay in our delivery, according to the courier person, was because there had been seven deliveries at our time slot and we were the sixth one.
Apparently 8 Durian is a very popular site for durian, possibly due to their affordable prices and premium-quality varieties available.
So I strongly recommend that you place your order quickly as soon as stock is available. Do not delay or you will lose out.
Tasting the durians
Did the taste of the durians live up to the hype surrounding it?
Penang Red Prawn
This durian was pale yellow in colour, and at the same time being slightly wrinkled in appearance and a tad soft to the touch. The fruits have typically round seeds.
The texture was smooth and creamy and a tad soft when it was eaten at room temperature.
It had a sweet, mildly strong note, and was soft and slightly moist on the tongue.
After tasting, we had suspected that this particular durian may have been about a day or two old, and was not packed fresh on the day of delivery.
Premium Mao Shan Wang ‘AAA Grade’
This durian had an intense yellow colour and in the portion that we received, some fruits had the seed visible and the seeds are typically flat.
It was firm, smooth in appearance and looked fresh.
The profile of the fruit was smooth in texture with a fairly rich, intense flavour, at the same time, being sweet and creamy with a mild bitter note.
Unfortunately we felt that a small part of the fruit, which has a longer, less flat seed, was not fully ripe at one end; the texture of this particular portion was more powdery and rougher than the rest of the fruit, and with a substantially weaker taste profile too.
Premium Black Gold Durian
This durian was mainly yellow with some fruits having slightly translucent dark patches.
The fruit looked particularly fresh overall, with the yellow portion being firm and the darker portion being slightly soft to the touch.
The flavour note was deliciously rich, intense and very creamy, sweet with a slightly bitter taste. We thought that it is distinctly unique for this variety of durian.
Overall, saving the best for last, this one was probably our favourite durian out of the lot, with its unique bitter/sweet taste profile that durian lovers would definitely enjoy.
Conclusion
Despite a few hiccups and the difficulty in getting our hands on the durians, I would definitely recommend going to 8 Durian this season – if you are looking for high quality premium durians that taste great.
