With Covid-19 coronavirus spreading rapidly around the world, we all need to have a strong immune system in order to fight off the disease and reduce our chances of getting seriously sick. Incorporating specific foods into our diet can strengthen our immunity. Here are some foods that help to boost our immune system.
Dark chocolate
Containing an antioxidant called theobromine, dark chocolate helps to protect the body against free radicals, which are molecules that are produced when the body breaks down food or comes into contact with pollutants. Free radicals damage the body’s cells, causing diseases.
Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has antioxidants and inflammatory benefits to boost our immune response.
Oily fish
Fish such as salmon, tuna and pilchards contain omega-3 fatty acids which reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, a harmful auto-immune condition that is caused when the body’s white blood cells mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.
Spinach
Containing flavonoids, Vitamins C and E as well as carotenoids, spinach helps to boost the immune system as well as helping to prevent common colds.
Green tea
Green tea contains flavonoids which may reduce the risk of a cold. As well, it has very little caffeine compared to coffee, so it can be taken as a healthy alternative to coffee.
Sunflower seeds
These are a rich source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant, which improves immune function, by fighting off free radicals which can potentially damage cells.
Almonds
Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and also contain manganese, magnesium and fibre. Taking a quarter cup of almonds every day is a good practice to keep your immune system strong and healthy.
Oranges
Oranges are rich in Vitamin C, which people usually take to fight off colds, flu and other infections. In fact, studies have shown that taking massive amounts of Vitamin C, up to 10 grams per day, can reduce the seriousness of symptoms for Covid-19 for those who have been diagnosed.
Conclusion
Now that you know some of the foods that are good for you, why not add them into your daily diet, and keep yourself strong and healthy to fight off not only Covid-19, as well as other infections.
