Gelato lovers, you will be in for a massive treat next year.
That’s because come March, the Gelato World Tour, which is known as the ‘Formula One of Gelato’ will be taking place at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. This is a celebration of the artisanal Italian cold treat that’s enjoyed worldwide, as a healthy and mouth-watering alternative to the traditional ice cream dessert.
Said Valentina Right, Vice President of the Bruto and Poerio Carpigiani Foundation, “Gelato is more than a typical dessert. Though its luxurious creaminess may intuitively suggest otherwise, gelato is freshly made every day in a way that means it’s significantly lower in calories and sugar than other ice creams. It is high in proteins, calcium and Vitamin B2. It also contains about half the fat of typical industrial ice creams, which is the reason why gelato is fast becoming the choice dessert for health-conscious food lovers.”
Event will bring the fine art of gelato making to the Singapore and Asia-Pacific region
Having taken Europe, North America, Middle East and Oceania by storm, this event will be the first of its kind to be held in Asia. It will aim to bring the fine art of gelato making culture to Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.
Visitors will be able to enjoy lessons and workshops on the ancient art of making gelato from Italian experts and witness the competition, which will involve the final selection of 16 flavours from the Singaporean and Asia-Pacific entrants.
Said Achille Sassoli, Director of the Gelato World Tour, “The city’s excellence and creativity in diverse food experiences, healthy lifestyle, artistic culture and desire for high-quality locally-sourced food ingredients in Singapore, makes it the perfect choice for our first competition in Asia.”
A treat for both the public and gelato artisans
The event will be the coolest championship in Singapore – and certainly a treat for both the public, as well as artisans who will have the chance to explore the rich history of gelato that dates back thousands of years.
Both adults and children alike, will be completely spoilt for choice, at the sheer range of gelato available – made fresh in front of their very eyes.
Said Sassoli, “We are delighted to bring a selection of the best Asia-Pacific gelato artisans to Singapore, and invite you to join in our quest to find the world’s best gelato flavour.”
Event organizers have plans to collaborate with local partners and supporters of gelato
Organized by Carpigiani Gelato University, the most prestigious gelato school in the world, with 13 schools in five countries, this event will also be patronized by the Italian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economic Development. Besides partnering with IFI (known worldwide for their famous gelato display cases) and MEC3 (the leading manufacturer of gelato and pastry ingredients), the organizers also have plans to collaborate with local partners and supporters of this cold Italian treat.
From now, gelato chefs with outlets in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand (but except China and Japan) are invited to submit their entries for the Singapore competition. The top 16 competitors will be selected by February 15, 2015. You can find more details at www.gelatoworldtour.com.
The Gelato Charity Dinner
As well, Singapore will also be playing host to the Gelato Charity Dinner – as a prelude to the Gelato World Tour. This event will put gelato in the spotlight – from starters to desserts. Hot and cold combinations, savoury and sweet flavours and a unique fusion between eastern and western gelato culinary masterpieces will be available at this event.
Proceeds from this charity dinner event, as well as the money collected from visitors for the tasting portions at the Gelato World Tour, will go directly to charity.
Carpigiani Gelato University in Singapore
As an added bonus, culinary students with a sweet tooth can look forward to the opening of the official campus of the Carpigiani Gelato University in Singapore, after the Gelato World Tour has concluded.
Located at the premises of the At-Sunrice Culinary School, this campus will be the hub for the Asia-Pacific countries – thus making Singapore the Gelato Capital of Asia.
