(The Baci Italian Cafe at 112 Katong is now closed.)
Baci Italian Café was born out of an idea to create a quality Italian café serving top-range coffee and delicious café-style foods. At the same time, the founders wanted the eatery to resemble the neighbourhood cafes in Italy where people go to relax and simply chill out. Recently, I got the chance to eat at this Italian restaurant in Singapore’s Katong area. How did the food fare?
The Atmosphere and Food Items
The eatery definitely reminded me of a really cosy café, where I can chill out and relax, with a large variety of magazines at one corner of the room and a kids’ play area at another corner. As well, an al-fresco dining area is also available, for those who want to sit outside and watch the world go by. Pizzas, pastas, burgers, sandwiches and meat dishes, as well as fish and chicken items are available. All-day breakfast sets comprising of items such as pancakes, sausages and hash browns are served too. I ordered the Mariana sauce based spaghetti pasta with chicken and mushroom as extra toppings. My two companions ordered the pan roasted fish and the roasted chicken Italiano, respectively. We selected a sausage side order too. For dessert, we chose a cheesecake and tiramisu– our two favourite after-dinner sweets. We also had a hot chocolate, to wash down the dinner.
Mariana Sauce Spagetti
My spaghetti was served with a tomato-based sauce containing garlic, herbs and onions. I also added chicken and mushrooms as extra toppings. I was quite disappointed with this dish and couldn’t detect the taste of fresh tomatoes in the cooking. As well, the texture of the spaghetti was soft. I would have preferred it to be firmer and more chewy (al-dente). The sliced chicken was also a little dry and hard for my liking. But the chopped mushrooms were quite nice though and these added a rather yummy flavour to the dish.
Pan Roasted Fish
This Dory fish was flavoured with herbs and spices and topped with caper sauce. My companion enjoyed the fish and thought that the texture was just right. It was soft and moist. She also liked the sauce and felt that it was tasty, but at the same time, it did not drown out the fish. I tried a little and while I enjoyed the fish, the sauce was a bit rich and slightly strong for my liking. The dish was served with vegetables (capsicum, chillis and onions) and baked potatoes. I took a couple of pieces and really enjoyed the potatoes. They were chewy on the outside, and hot and soft on the inside. The salad was pretty average, though.
Roasted Chicken Italiano
The roasted chicken was cooked in a white wine sauce – and served with pepper and onions. My companion commented that the chicken meat was a bit tough. However, he really enjoyed the chicken sauce and said that this was delicious.
Sausage
A Spanish style sausage, this has a slightly chewy skin and is a little harder than your typical German sausage. I thought the sausage was easily one of the best items that we had ordered and was served piping hot. The meat was tasty and full of flavour and the skin was nice and crunchy.
Cheesecake
This was a rather generous slice of cheesecake with a thick layer of vanilla ice cream on top. It was definitely one of the most delicious cheesecakes I have tried so far. The cheese used was quite dense but at the same time, it tasted really yummy. The vanilla ice cream on top went very well together with the cheesecake. The graham biscuit base was tasty. It was light and buttery and combined well together with the flavour of the cheese. I would definitely return to this café for their cheesecakes.
Tiramisu Cake
This was one of the better versions of tiramisu that I have eaten. The coffee and alcohol soaked sponge came out quite strongly but at the same time, it did not overpower the cake at all. Instead, the flavours combined together really well. The layer of cream on the top tasted scrumptious.
Hot Chocolate
The presentation of this hot chocolate was good. It came served in a pretty looking glass with a small chocolate chip biscuit at the side. With the chocolate strength being just right, I enjoyed this drink and it helped to satisfy my chocolate cravings. The bite-sized chocolate chip cookie was also yummy and this contained a generous amount of dark chocolate chips. This is something that I would probably drink again at this café.
Overall Verdict
The desserts at Baci’s Italian Cafe are really good and I would definitely return to eat these. Other yummy desserts on their menu include the red velvet cake and chocolate brownies too, which I may consider trying next time. Baci? Great review, thanks for sharing. Makes me want to visit the places too. There is this map called CafeSG that lets you find all the local cafes in Singapore! Super useful for cafe hopping and to find cafes near home and workplace.
