If you love all things with salted egg yolk, then you definitely will want to try KFC Singapore’s brand new menu item.
This is because to celebrate National Day, KFC Singapore has released a limited-edition GoldSpice Chicken, which is marinated in signature KFC Hot & Crispy marinade, then coated with salted egg, chilli, curry leaves and sweet basil and deep-fried.
The new chicken item is inspired by Singaporeans’ love for the flavours of salted egg, curry and chilli.
I love my salted egg, so I decided to brave the queues at KFC during the lunch hour today – and bought a GoldSpice Chicken Meal for myself, in order to see whether this was worth the hype.
I could definitely taste the salted egg yolk flavour present in the chicken. However this is not the only flavour that I could detect, though.
I felt that the salted egg taste however, seems to compete in my mouth, with the equally rich flavours coming from the KFC Hot & Crispy marinade.
The salted egg taste in the chicken is not as strong or prevalent as I would have liked – as compared to the flavours of many of those salted egg yolk potato chips, that have sprung up all over Singapore.
I had also noticed the the flavour was mainly in the batter; the meat didn’t really have any of the salted egg taste to it. But then again, I suppose that it would be hard for the flavour to seep into the chicken meat, due to the method of preparing and frying the chicken. For instance, to get the flavour in the meat, the chicken will have to be braised instead of deep-fried.
But at least the chicken was crispy on the outside, as well as being juicy and moist on the inside. So at least the quality that I have come to expect of KFC chicken was still there, in the new chicken variant.
Prices of the GoldSpice Chicken begin at S$8.55 for a two-piece meal.
Chocolate Hazelnut Fries
And for those who love sweet and savoury combinations, they can look forward to KFC’s new Chocolate Hazelnut Fries, which had also been released to celebrate Singapore’s National Day.
As I love all things chocolate, I also tried the Chocolate Hazelnut Fries and I thought this combination was quite pleasant to my taste buds. The sweetness of the Chocolate Hazelnut sauce had balanced out the saltiness coming from the fries very well. KFC fries are generally quite salty, so the added sweetness was good in this aspect.
But I had thought there wasn’t quite enough chocolate sauce on the fries. Only the top layer of fries had a drizzle of chocolate on it, and once I had eaten through this, it was basically like eating regular fries after that.
Also, I had felt too, that because the chocolate sauce was drizzled onto the fries, this had also made the fries more soggy than I would have liked. So I suppose it means that once you order this, the dish has to be eaten quite quickly.
But I must say that eating chocolate together with fries is a combination that may not suit everyone. If you are not really a fan of the sweet and savoury flavour contrast, then this may not be for you.
The Chocolate Hazelnut Fries are priced at S$2.90, as an add-on to any regular meal purchase, or else at S$4.20 as an a-la-carte order.
Chocolate Hazelnut Egg Tart
As well, to cater to those with a sweet tooth, KFC also launched the Chocolate Hazelnut Egg Tart, which is basically an egg custard tart in puff pastry and fancied up with creamy hazelnut chocolate.
I had thought this was quite enjoyable. I felt that the hazelnut chocolate infusion had added an extra kick to the eggy flavour of the Portuguese-style egg custard tart – which I really liked.
Unlike the fries, I also thought there was also ample chocolate in the tart. The chocolate is drizzled on top of the egg tart, as well as lining the base.
Overall, the combination of the egg custard and chocolate-hazelnut flavours in this tart, really packs a punch when eaten together, and this is a dessert that I would say that I’d order again if I happen to be near a KFC outlet during mealtimes. My only gripe is that each Chocolate Hazelnut egg tart is quite small.
And if you love your Nutella, then I think you would definitely enjoy this dessert too.
This Chocolate Hazelnut Egg Tart will set you back by S$1.50 each.
