King’s Potong has recently released two new flavours that pay homage to their Asian heritage. These are the King’s Potong Signature Thai Mango and King’s Potong Signature Coconut.
Since its humble beginnings in 1975, King’s Potong, which is part of the F&N Creameries group, has grown into one of the leading ice cream brands in Singapore and Malaysia, with its exhaustive range of products that include the signature flagship King’s Potong ice creams and the premium King’s Potong Gold ice creams.
With their traditional recipes and timeless Asian inspired flavours, the brand brings back fond memories of old days gone by. For our family, this is definitely the case. As a little girl, I still remember going to the neighbourhood mamak shop to buy a Potong ice cream whenever I felt like indulging in a sweet, cool treat, with one of my favourite traditional flavours being the red bean Potong ice cream.
King’s Potong company recently sent me a media drop containing both the new ice cream flavours.
For the King’s Potong ice creams, I generally like having these, because I find that they tend to be more smooth and creamy than some of the other Potong ice creams that I have tried.
Here are my thoughts and comments about the new flavours of the King’s Potong ice creams.
King’s Potong Signature Thai Mango
Mangoes are the ultimate fruit of the tropics and King’s Potong Signature Thai Mango is made using Oak-Rong mango puree imported directly from Thailand with no added preservatives.
Thailand’s Oak-Rong mangoes were selected because these are the favourites for many Thais. Characterised with a deep groove along the edges of the fruit, Oak-Rong mangoes are prized for its sweet and succulent flesh and its alluring tropical scent. These are also the perfect choice for the mango sticky rice dessert that is popular amongst both locals and tourists alike in Thailand and is widely considered to be the king of all mangoes.
In the King’s Potong Signature Thai Mango ice creams, the Oak-Rong mango puree is churned with coconut milk to add a savoury flavour with the inclusion of mango bits offering a multi-sensorial indulgence.
I really liked this mango ice cream. The mango flavour is very pleasant and clean. The flavour of the mango comes out and hits me immediately, but at the same time, it is not overpowering. It is also very natural too, with a very clean taste that is neither tangy nor sickly.
As well, I like the fact that there are some mango pieces inside the ice cream too, and this gives the ice cream a little bit of bite, which had helped to balance out the smoothness of the Potong ice cream.
So this is definitely an ice cream that I will be eating again.
King’s Potong Signature Coconut
Made with fresh Thai coconut juice and cream, this flavour bursts with the rich, creamy taste of the tropical fruit. Delightful bits of young coconut flesh are also encased within the delectable coconut juice iced confection and this intensifies the coconut taste, to give a truly Asian flavour.
When I tried this flavour, I also thought it was refreshing and enjoyable but it did not leave as strong an impression on me as compared to the Mango flavour though. Unlike many other coconut desserts, the King’s Potong Signature Coconut ice cream tastes natural and authentic.
I could detect the subtle flavours of coconut water and coconut milk in it, with some chunks of coconut flesh to add some texture and bite to the ice cream. I think that there may also have been some coconut cream inside to give the ice cream its white colour and creamy texture.
My mum and dad had remarked that they had preferred this flavour over the King’s Potong Signature Thai Mango flavour.
