Spoonful Meals, the largest cloud kitchen operator and delivery-only brand creator from Hong Kong, has now launched in Singapore.
With more than 1 million meals delivered to date, Spoonful Meals aims to provide Singaporeans with more choice, more convenience and more delicious food in the thriving delivery market.
Singapore is ready for delivery-only brands
Says Rishi Arora, General Manager, Spoonful Meals Singapore, “The success of the delivery model in Singapore suggests that the market is ready to withstand delivery-only brands. The whole food and dining culture is changing rapidly as consumers tastes get more sophisticated, yet they prioritise convenience.”
Also continued Rishi, “We are here to fulfil those needs by providing a large variety of delivery-only food brands which give top quality, genuinely tasty food delivered within 20 minutes using our delivery partner FoodPanda’s extensive network.”
Features two food brands, NOSH and GA
Spoonful Meals currently features two brands, NOSH and GA.
NOSH offers healthy Californian cuisine with its selection of burrito bowls, salads and vegetarian options. Lean meats, fresh vegetables and foods low in saturated fats are the order of the day.
While GA offers a selection of heart-warming Chinese favourites reminiscent of Cantonese-style comfort food. The Cantonese brand was designed by a team of Hong Kong based chefs with a focus on comfort and affordability.
Trying Spoonful Meals’ Offerings
I was recently invited to try some of Spoonful Meals’ offerings. So one evening, my family and I opted to get together and have a healthy dinner comprising of a selection of the tantalising offerings from both NOSH and GA.
However before I launch into my review, I have a disclaimer to make. This is because officially, NOSH and GA currently only deliver meals in the Central Business District and Woodlands areas, with more locations still in the works.
But for this review, the meals had been specially delivered to the Marine Parade area. Because the cloud kitchen is located in Woodlands, the 40-minute delivery time may have had an impact on the meals.
So as such, when the meals arrived at my doorstep, they were no longer hot. Instead, they were barely lukewarm. This may have invariably affected the taste profiles and textures of some of the foods delivered.
The delivery service
Nonetheless, I was impressed by the punctuality and efficiency of the meal delivery service. I had placed my orders in advance, requesting for a 7pm delivery time.
At 6pm, I received a personalised call from Rishi, that the meals were being prepared in the central kitchen and that they would be on the way.
Then about five minutes after that, Rishi texted me himself to let me know that my meals were being delivered, to arrive at 6:40pm.
At about 6:30pm, the FoodPanda delivery guy was in contact with me, as he had reached my location, and expressed some uncertainly about how to get to the delivery address. So I had instructed him accordingly, and my meals reached my doorstep at 6:35pm.
Trying the meals
From the NOSH menu, we had chosen the NOSH California Series Miso Salmon Grain Bowl & Sugar Snap ($14.90) as the main, with the Vegetable Sticks with Blue Cheese Dip ($3.90) as a side dish.
The NOSH California Series Miso Salmon Grain Bowl & Sugar Snap came in a hearty and substantial size, despite being advertised at having a low 600 calories per portion. As well, it was also rather tasty and I quite enjoyed the subtle flavour profiles coming from the dish. Who says that healthy food is bland?
The Miso sauce was especially delicious and its subtle saltiness combined perfectly with the savoury notes from the salmon, and with the Sugar Snap and vegetable mix served on the side, adding a nice crunch to the dish as well. Overall this had been a very well-balanced dish in terms of complementary flavours.
But unfortunately the salmon had been dry and overcooked. The texture of the carbohydrates – that is, the brown rice and quinoa grain mixture, was also slightly on the hard side for my liking. Perhaps this had been a tad undercooked.
As for the Vegetable Sticks with Blue Cheese Dip, the mixture of raw carrots, celery and cucumbers with some leafy greens, tasted fresh and crunchy, however the Blue Cheese sauce had a strong flavour, and drowned out the natural flavours coming from the vegetables. This would appeal to cheese lovers.
And from the GA menu, we had the Mongolian Cumin Pan-Fried Lamb, Baked Cauliflower with Brown Rice ($8.90) as the main dish, with the GA Chicken Leg ($4.90) for a hearty side dish.
The flavour profiles of the Mongolian Cumin Pan-Fried Lamb, Baked Cauliflower with Brown Rice were also yummy. The portion size was hearty and substantial. And I enjoyed the savoury and salty notes that emerged from the moist lamb slices, which went very well together with the brown rice. The flavours complemented each other well. Unfortunately the brown rice for this dish, too, had been a bit on the chewy side for my liking.
The GA Chicken Leg was also tasty. When I opened this package, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite being advertised as a side dish, the size of the portion is substantial enough to be a main meal. For this dish, you are given a whole chicken drumstick plus thigh, sitting on a bed of lightly sautéed cabbage. So far, so good.
And in terms of the flavours, I enjoyed the subtle salty, and slightly herbal notes coming from the chicken, but unfortunately, the meat was a tad on the dry and tough side, and I found that I had to add the Miso sauce from the salmon into the chicken, in order to give it some moisture.
Two more brands to launch next month
Additionally, two more brands, Sesame and JOMO, will launch this November. Sesame will serve Japanese bento boxes while JOMO has a vegan fast food concept.
With each brand offering a different type of cuisine, consumers are treated to a variety of food options to satisfy their immediate cravings.
And all of the brand’s meals are prepared and cooked in a cloud kitchen located centralised to the delivery area, to ensure that food delivered is always fresh and timely.
New corporate app is coming soon
Spoonful Meals currently operates through the Foodpanda delivery platform.
In the future though, corporate orders can be made via the Spoonful app, which will be launched soon, in November.
