Review: Combat Singapore’s Heat with Creamy Frozen Premium Desserts @ Mathilda’s Gelato Ice Cream Delivery

With a mixture of both local favourites and exotic flavours on offer, Mathilda’s Gelato Ice Cream Delivery prides themselves on using premium ingredients for their ice cream and gelato, aimed at bringing out the taste and flavour for their ice creams.

Flavours that are available range from D24 durian, black sesames and bubblegum, to espresso, and not forgetting the standard chocolate, strawberry and vanilla variants too.

As well, a few sorbet and frozen yoghurt options are available at Mathilda’s too, for those who prefer these instead of ice creams.

I recently tried out Mathilda’s Gelato Ice Cream Delivery. It had been very hard to choose what flavours I wanted because they had all looked yummy. I eventually picked four flavours from their website.

The ones which I went for, were as follows.

I have to comment, however, that many of the flavours on the website appeared to be sold out, including the strawberry, mango and matcha (Japanese green tea) flavours. So I was not actually able to make my choices from the entire selection.

The lack of available flavours aside, the website is intuitive, responsive and easy to navigate and the design looks clean, clear and uncluttered. This is good, because when I am focused on ordering my ice creams, I do not wish to be distracted by any unnecessary design elements.

In terms of the delivery, I recommend that you should allow at least half a day for the ice creams to be delivered to your doorstep.

I originally placed my order just before 5pm last Monday, opting for a 7pm delivery time on the same day.

However, due to logistics issues, the company informed me that they had received my order, but were not able to deliver my ice creams that same night.

So I opted for a new delivery time of 11am-12pm on the following day, Tuesday.

The ice creams eventually arrived at 12:15pm on Tuesday.

They came packaged in a Styrofoam box with two ice packs inside, in order to keep it cool. As well, eight small cups and plastic spoons were also included.

I could not wait to taste the ice creams.

I love anything containing chocolate, so the Chocolate Gelato was the first flavour that I had eagerly tried.

Containing 100% dairy milk and premium cocoa beans, Mathilda’s Chocolate Gelato is described as being slightly bittersweet.

And the chocolate notes are definitely apparent. The flavour of the chocolate is rich and creamy, solid and pretty dense. It is a very clean, pure and well-defined chocolatey taste. Lovers of dark chocolate desserts will definitely enjoy this. However, I noted that there does not seem to be much of a bitter aftertaste.

Nonetheless, I would definitely eat this version of Chocolate Gelato again.

As well, the texture was also smooth, though I found that the Chocolate Gelato had the tendency to melt extremely fast.

In fact, all the four flavours melted extremely fast at room temperature. For instance, less than three minutes after taking the ice cream out of the freezer to take pictures, I could already see it melting inside the tub. However the Chocolate Gelato had been the only one that was smooth in texture.

I found that the texture of the other three flavours seemed to be substantially rougher and ice crystals seemed to have formed on these as well – I thought this was a bit disappointing.

For the Speculoos ice cream, this has been described on the website as containing generous amounts of Biscoff biscuits for that spiced caramel kick, together with hints of cinnamon and brown sugar.

I could detect some crumbled Biscoff pieces in it, but unfortunately these were already softened and did not seem to give the ice cream the ‘crunchy bite’ that the website had described. Instead, I thought they only seemed to add to the rough texture of the ice cream.

In terms of the flavour, I would say that I could detect the cinnamon notes, more so than the spiced caramel flavour. This is also a pretty sweet flavour and I could pick up the sweetness pretty easily.

After trying this, I would say that I have tasted better versions of Speculoos ice cream elsewhere, where the flavour profiles are more balanced.

As described on Mathilda’s website, the Espresso ice cream is said to contain only premium coffee beans which are carefully roasted to bring out the aroma and acidity that coffee lovers enjoy.

The coffee notes in this flavour are very distinctive, and this flavour was pretty enjoyable. As well, the bittersweet coffee notes, when combined with the sweeter ice cream, helped to bring about a contrast that made this flavour a rather pleasant one to eat.

The Macadamia Caramel ice cream is described as being made using handpicked macadamia nuts which are then roasted to add extra flavour.

In terms of the taste, the caramel notes were definitely apparent, adding to the sweetness of this ice cream flavour.

The macadamia nut pieces were solid, chunky and rather chewy. However, I thought they did not really seem to add anything to the flavour profile of this ice cream.
