In a thrilling weekend of action at the HSBC SVNS Rugby tournament in Singapore, history was made.
In the men’s game, Argentina claimed their first-ever HSBC SVNS league title and in the women’s final, New Zealand overcame Australia to win both the Singapore and the SVNS women’s league titles.
In a thrilling winner-takes-all final game, both the Black Ferns and the Wallroos were deadlocked on 106 points apiece at the top of the standings, with nothing to separate them.
But Australia had no reply to a strong performance by the Black Ferns Sevens, which saw New Zealand winning their fourth successive tournament and claiming their place as league winners.
Said Michaela Blyde, who scored a hat-trick in the final, “The beginning of the season was a little rocky for us so we didn’t want to think too far. But the vibes in Singapore have been incredible. To come away with the Singapore title and the league win is really special.”
The Singapore men’s tournament was won by New Zealand who edged Ireland 17-14 in the men’s final to successfully defend their Singapore crown. This is also the All Blacks Sevens second consecutive gold, after their win in Hong Kong.
To win the league, Argentina had to dig deep, coming from 10-0 behind to win 14-10 in their fifth-place playoff against South Africa.
France overcame Fiji in the third-place playoff game to clinch third position in the league standings and Great Britain secured their spot in the Grand Finals in Madrid by clinching the eighth position in the standings.
The new look HSBC SVNS 2024 featured seven regular season events. These were staged in Dubai, Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Singapore, where the League Winners were decided, before the inaugural Grand Final in Madrid on 31 May to 2 June. Here, the HSBC SVNS 2024 champions will be crowned in a winner takes-all event featuring the top eight teams from the league season.
As well, the Madrid event will see the bottom four teams from the HSBC SVNS league 2024 compete with the top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 in an all-new high stakes promotion and relegation shootout competition.
