Last month, at the launch event of the Mizuno Concept Store at Kallang Wave Mall, media guests received a pair of the new Mizuno Wave Rider 18 – Osaka Edition running shoes, as a door gift.
Three shoe colours are available
The pair that I was given was the ladies edition, and they came in a very pretty pink colour. The moment I saw these shoes, I fell in love with the colour. While I thought these pink shoes are bright and striking, they aren’t loud and do not shout out at you.
The other versions available are a blue pair (male edition) and an intricately designed rainbow coloured pair (unisex edition).
The inspiration and concept for the Osaka Edition shoe design was from the Osaka Marathon, which had taken place in October this year.
Sleek and lightweight everyday running shoes
Weighing about 220 grams and with a heel drop of 12mm, the Mizuno Wave Rider 18 shoes are touted as being the perfect fit for runners who want a sleek and lightweight everyday running shoe. Some key features of these lightweight running shoes include a refined toe spring for a smoother toe off, an ideal heel fit and smoother mid foot – so that the shoes will just feel like they are an extension of your feet.
The shoes also feature a Pebax Wave Plate for an improved fit and a smoother striding and a resilient forefoot sole design for better shock resistance and durability.
Shoes are comfortable and fit snugly
Since getting the running shoes, I have taken them out for a few training runs, ranging from about 6km to 15km. I have found these shoes quite comfortable. They fit me pretty snugly and the amount of cushioning provided by the heel as well as the upper half of the shoe felt just right.
I also found that there was plenty of room in the toe box of the shoes – this is also a good sign because it will easily be able to accommodate the expanding feet during long runs.
No chafing or slipping problems
Also, even on my 15km run, there were no chafing or slipping problems and I was able to run very comfortably. The shoes remained pretty comfortable throughout the whole run and in fact, I had even felt as though I could have continued running.
At the same time, I felt as though the shoes helped me to gain momentum and propel me forward during my run, so I would expend less energy to run per stride.
Overall Comments
As a whole, I would recommend these shoes to runners who are looking for a comfortable neutral cushioning running shoes and do not have any glaring gait problems that need to be rectified urgently.
