Over the next few weeks, you can purchase a pair of limited edition McDonald’s red and white socks through Groupon – and you will be treated to a free strawberry sundae.
The socks are part of a series of fund-raising activities organised globally by McDonald’s resturants. These activities celebrate the 40th birthday of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The aim of this charity is to bring love to sick and hospitalised children.
RMHC Singapore came into existence in 1989
In Singapore, RMHC came into existence in 1989 and has helped more than 900 needy and sick children with their medical, surgical and rehabilitative treatment costs, with grants amounting to more than $5 million.
As well, the RMHC charity has also provided a ‘home away from home’ at no charge, for families to stay close to their hospitalised child at the National University Hospital (NUH).
To date, they have helped more than 170 families who have had children receiving treatment for cancer, trauma or organ transplants.
McDonald’s contributes 5 cents from every sale of its Happy Meals to the charity.
Love and support is very powerful for the families of sick children
Said Associate Professor Daniel Goh, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Paediatrics, NUH and Board Member of the RHMC Singapore, “Love and support of the family is as powerful as the strongest medicine. This is especially so when the child is sick.
“As a child and family journeys through an illness, the presence of the family and loved ones is the most reassuring factor in the environment of stress, uncertainty and even pain,” he added.
In fact, on many occasions, only a touch or hug from the child’s immediate caregiver is able to soothe the discomfort or pain, of allay the fears of an ill child, much more than any analgesic would be capable of, according to Associate Professor Goh.
A series of fun activities to celebrate and help the RMHC children
To help the children at RMHC on the charity’s 40th anniversary, there are several activities that McDonald’s is planning. These are as follows.
Purchase of limited edition socks
Make a donation to the charity by buying a pair of red and white socks on Groupon, from now until 28 October. You can opt to buy these at $10, $20 or $50.
To show their appreciation of your support for RMHC, McDonalds has included a free strawberry sundae treat that you may immediately redeem from any McDonald’s restaurant in Singapore.
Create red and white themed images
Spread the word for the RMHC by dressing up in red and white stripes, putting on the socks or creating your own red and white themed images. Share these images and your well wishes for these families on Instagram with the hashtags #forRMHC and #RMHCSG.
Join in the McHappy Day celebration
To culminate the end of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of RMHC, McDonald’s will be holding their annual McHappy Day on 16 November.
This event will see 600 volunteers taking part in the McHappy Day Walk and Sale across Singapore, to sell the socks. These volunteers will include corporate staff and restaurant crew from McDonald’s Singapore and friends of RMHC.
Families with young children are also welcome to celebrate at the #forRMHC party – and participate in the various booths that offer balloon sculpting, face painting for children, games and more. Photo opportunities with the VIP guest at the party, the one and only Ronald McDonald, are also available.
The McHappy Day Party will take place on:
Date: 16 November 2014
Time: 1pm to 5pm
Venue: Tampines Mall Event Space @ Level 4
This party will be used to raise funds for the RMHC charity. So if you are free, and you want to do your part for charity, drop by and join in the fun.
