I recently received the Fem earbuds from Sudio, and since then, I have been using them mostly during my long runs for my marathon training. This is always a crucial time where I need some music to motivate me and keep me sane.

Unboxing the Fem

The Fem reached my doorstep in a very clean looking black box with a pull tab on the front. Unfortunately the double-sided tape appeared to have lifted off the cardboard box in the post, but otherwise, the package had arrived in good condition.

Taking the Fem out of the original black box, I discovered that the earphones were packaged into another smaller, clean and uncluttered looking white box, the design consistent with Sudio’s other product packagings.

My unit of the Fem is a sweet baby-pink colour. Besides pink, the other colours available are black, white and blue, so this means that there is indeed a colour to cater for everybody.

I quite liked the design of the Fem and its carry case. The Fem’s circular carrying and storage case, which is also a pretty matching pink colour, is classy and elegant and help to set it apart from most of the rectangular carry cases currently out there on the saturated earbuds market these days.

The Sudio Fem’s Design 

In terms of the design of the Fem earphones themselves, they are quite different to the shape of most true wireless earbuds out there. It is obvious that Sudio has done a complete redesign here.

With each earbud having two microphones, one at the top and the other at the bottom, the shape of the Sudio Fem reminds me of a person’s ear, with the chromed part looking like the ear lobe. I thought it to be quite intriguing.

Pairing Process

Taking the Fem out for the first time to pair with my iPhone XS Max was a simple and fuss-free process. All I needed to do was to plug the Fem into my ears and switch on the Bluetooth of my iPhone and my phone was able to detect the Fem within minutes.

The Fem fit into my ears straight out of the box so I didn’t need to adjust anything. 

But for those who have larger or smaller ears, the earbuds come with four different sized ear-tips, so this means there should be a size tailored for everybody.

Using the Fem: First impressions

To date, I have used the Fem several times during my runs, with my longest run lasting 1 hour 40 minutes so far.

While the Sudio Fem is a snug and generally comfortable fit as a whole, they do not feel as though they are going to come out of my ears when I use the earphones during, say, my commutes, but there have actually been occasions towards the beginning of a couple of my runs, where I felt as though the Fem was about to slip out of my ears, a feeling which generally stayed with me for a kilometre or so. 

Each time I had this sensation, I would push the Fem back into my ears and twist the earbuds to adjust the fit.

After about four or five times during my run though, the constant twisting of the Fem would eventually work and I would then no longer need to adjust the Fem for the remaining duration of my runs.

Truly independent earbuds

Unlike many other true wireless earbuds which usually have a pre-determined “master” earbud, I also have to comment that the Fem is truly independent, because both the left and the right earbud can be used interchangeably to play music by itself.

For instance, with one earbud in the case and the other one in my ear, my music will still play. Whether it is the left or the right earbud inside the case, it does not matter. This was pretty amazing to find out.

Sound Quality 

In terms of the sound quality, I think that there is an improvement over Sudio’s previous earphones iterations.

The sound is crisp, clear and consistent, and does not drop. The bass is a tad heavy, and the highs, whilst not being ear-piercing, are generally good enough for most casual listeners who want their music on the go.

Touch Panels to replace the buttons

As I used the Sudio Fem, I noticed that there are no buttons on the Fem. 

Instead, the earbuds have touch panels to control the music, with functionality being determined via single, double and triple taps, as well as via holding down the touch panels.

While this is a great idea in line with keeping the design of the earbuds sleek and elegant, I would have to admit that the sensitivity of the touch panels can be improved, especially with regards to the double and triple tapping. In fact, I had to often resort to using my phone to control my music, rather than using the Fem’s touch panels.

Sudio Fem’s Battery Life

The battery life of the Sudio Fem is six hours, with the charging case providing two additional charges. 

This is more than enough battery life to last me through my long training runs, which will cap out at about three hours for my marathon training sessions. 

Using a USB-C cable, the Fem is also easy to recharge, and it recharges quite fast, with just 15 minutes of charge providing you with one hour of listening time.

Fem are Waterproof

As well, the Sudio Fem has a waterproof rating of IPX-5, meaning that it can withstand heavy rain or a downpour. So you should be fine if you get caught in the rain with the Fem inside your ears. Just don’t take it swimming with you, though.
