Carlsberg’s Believers Brew for Jurgen Klopp

Crafted in honour of Jurgen Klopp, who managed Liverpool FC from 2015 to the end of last season, Carlsberg’s Believers Brew is a limited-edition beer with just 491 bottles produced worldwide.

The number is significant because Klopp managed a total of 491 games during his tenure at Liverpool and each bottle represents one specific game. These were all sold at an auction, with some bottles fetching prices as high as £6500.

The beer is made from a combination of 50 per cent Carlsberg signature malt and 50 per cent Erdinger signature wheat malt.

As well, 30 additional bottles were also produced to give away at Carlsberg events and activations.

Last Thursday night, Carlsberg organised a competition to give away one such bottle and 50 Liverpool fans were selected to take part.

The competition consisted of three rounds and fans were pitted against each other in a series of thrilling contests of wit, knowledge and skill. The winner would be crowned Singapore’s most passionate Liverpool fan and their prize was the bottle of Believers Brew.

The first round was a quiz which was conducted online on contestants’ smartphones. Contestants were ranked based both on whether they got the right answers, and how long they took to answer each question. The top nine scorers from the quiz would move on to the next round.

Some of the questions included:

  • Which club did Jurgen Klopp manage before joining Liverpool FC?
  • Which prestigious award did Jurgen Klopp win in 2019?
  • In which year did Liverpool FC win their 19th English league title?
  • How many points did Liverpool FC achieve in the Premier League during their title-winning season under Klopp?

Some of the questions were rather straightforward but others proved to be more challenging.

The quiz winner got 10  questions correct out of 15.

For the second round, contestants had to guess the identity of both past and present Liverpool players by their hair, eyes, beard or forehead.

Contestants were arranged into groups of three and the winner from each group moved on to the final round.

It was a buzzer-style format and whoever pressed the buzzer first, would get to answer the question.

This proved to be much harder than expected, with several of the contestants giving wrong responses because there were several players with similar looking foreheads and hairstyles.

For example, Ryan Gravenberch’s forehead proved to be almost identical to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s or Mo Salah’s.

In the final round, the three finalists had to come up with their dream Liverpool XI comprising of both past and present players, and explain their choices to the audience. The winner was decided by public voting.

Jemuel Fung, 29, emerged as the winner. He said: “I did not expect to win. I was very surprised. There were two other participants there as well and they gave very, very detailed explanations on their formations so as compared to me, I felt they were the ones that were of higher chance to win.”

Free flow of Carlsberg beer and tidbits were served throughout the evening and the event was hosted by Glenn Ong.

Thank you once again to Carlsberg for putting together the fun and entertaining event.
