More than 100 girls between the ages of five to 18 years old recently had the chance to take part in a HSBC All Girls Rugby Clinic led by Rugby Sevens ambassadors Huriana Manuel and Waisale Serevi at the Ministry Of Education (Evans) Stadium.
Girls took part in various rugby drills
The girls, who are from various junior rugby clubs, schools and academies, spent the time taking part in a series of drills containing skills that are specific to the Sevens game.
A great idea to grow rugby in Singapore
And the two rugby legends were pleased to have been part of such a clinic, as a way of helping to grow grassroots rugby in the region.
Said Manuel, “It’s a fantastic idea, which HSBC, along with Singapore Rugby, have combined to bridge the gap between grassroots rugby and national rugby.”
He continued, “It also shows how much the women’s game has grown and it is really exciting to see in the Asian part of the world. It’s been an amazing journey and I look forward too seeing some of these girls in the Rugby World Series in the next couple of years.”
Agreed his compatriot Serevi, “Supporting the grassroots rugby is a very important thing that HSBC is doing. This is the first time that I am doing an all-girls programme. It’s really cool to see that they are trying to lift the standard of women’s rugby in Singapore.”
Such events will greatly benefit rugby teams and fans here
Through the staging of such events, Severi also feels that this will have a huge impact on the Singapore rugby community.
He said, “I believe it’ll make a big impact to the teams and fans that are here. We need the tournament to stay and to grow and we need people to come out in numbers to support the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens.”
