Manchester United have just signed Juan Mata from Chelsea for 37 million pounds. The player was deemed as surplus requirement at Stanford Bridge. Whether the Red Devils’ new signing will turn out to be a success or a flop, only time will tell.
I spoke to die-hard Manchester United fan, Ong Hong Jie, 26, about the mid-season signing of Mata.
Read on, to find out what this Red Devils fan said.
How do you feel about Juan Mata joining Man United?
A masterstroke signing, but much can be said about this deal. If Mata was signed at the start of the season, it might have been a different story. For example, Mata needs time to blend into the Man United squad – and so he may not be a success straight away.
If Mata flops within the first few matches at Man United, the knives would definitely be out much faster, than if he had been signed in the summer transfer window.
In your opinion, do you think that Mata is the type of player that Man United needs?
Judging from his performances for Chelsea, he could be what Manchester United needs after Paul Scholes retired, for example, picking out pin-point passes with accuracy. This season, the Red Devils have been sorely lacking in this area.
Would you say that Mata is a panic buy or a shrewd signing for Man United?
It might be seen still as a panic buy due to this deal happening in the middle of the season, but United’s midfield this season has been just a flickering flame with no creative spark.
The midfield was something that troubled United time and time again this season. Give credit where it’s due to Moyes though, for he has been scouting around Europe for the best players to bolster the creative spark.
Do you think that Mata will be able to salvage Man United’s season or will he turn out to be an expensive flop?
There were rumours that Moyes cancelled the players’ Friday off (yesterday) to help integrate Mata straight away into the team. Sure he has played for Chelsea in the English Premier League, but he still needs time to blend into the new team’s style of play and formation.
To be a success, Mata must prove why he deserves to wear that sacred shirt and why they made him the most expensive signing ever.
It’s too early to say though, whether Mata will be a flop signing for now.
Where could Mata be deployed in the team?
Playing well on the flanks or as an attacking midfielder, Mata might blend in as an attacking-minded midfield role while Carrick holds the line.
Or on the other hand, he can still jinx his way past fullbacks by playing on the left / right wings.
Kagawa, Valencia, Nani and Young … You have been warned.
With Mata’s signing, do you think any players will be shown the door in the summer?
If the Mata signing is a sign of things to come, other United players had better be on their toes. They know that they have been under-performing. And this makes their position very vulnerable
Evra, Vidic, Rio and Carrick all are on the wrong side of 30. If this was Serie A, they could still carry on for probably another three to four years – but not in the BPL. An example was when Norwich’s Robert Snordgrass tormented Evra on the flanks – and the left back showed his age.
Southampton’s Luke Shaw, FC Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, PSG’s Edinson Cavani and Atletico Madrid’s Koke – all potential United targets – are signs that Moyes want to blend in young blood with the more experienced squad players to strike a balance within the team.
