OCBC Cycle 2024 is back on 11 and 12 May with new categories

A brand new category will debut at the OCBC Cycle this year.

The 40km Foldie Ride by Brompton, which is taking place for the first time in 2024, is a unique category for cyclists who ride foldable bicycles regardless of the brand they use. The route for this new category they will ride is the same as the 40km Sportive Ride and participants signing up for this category will receive a special Brompton branded event t-shirt and medal.

OCBC Cycle, now into its 16th edition in 2024, will be happening on 11 and 12 May.

And Brompton will be organising training rides in the lead up to this event, to get cyclists used to the distance that they are to ride and build up their proficiency.

The Sportive Ride and the Straits Times Ride are back, together with the rest of the ride categories and OCBC Cycle is looking to attract 7,000 participants across 10 categories, with 1,000 expected to take part in the brand new category, Foldie Ride by Brompton.

Also, with regards to the competitive events, the OCBC Cycle South East Asian Speedway Championships is making a return since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and this will see nine teams from South East Asian countries including Singapore, slugging it out for the title. The last edition was held in 2019 and this saw Philippines clinch the win, with Malaysia and Thailand finishing in second and third place respectively.

Registration for OCBC Cycle kicked off at 12pm last Tuesday at OrchardGateway Mall. At the time of launch, over 100 cyclists were already queueing to be one of the first to register for the event.

First in line was Jeffrey Chung, 43, who signed up for the 40km Brompton ride. He said: “I have been taking part in OCBC Cycle for many years already. I came here since yesterday at 12pm to queue up.” For his time and dedication, Chung wins himself a Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro (worth S$712).

Other prizes for early birds include a staycation package at JEN Singapore OrchardGateway, as well as vouchers and merchandise from Decathlon, Brompton, Lazer and Sunday Shades.

Said Helen Wong, Group CEO, OCBC, “During the last 15 years, OCBC Cycle Singapore has brought in new rides and sponsors while proudly remaining Singapore’s signature mass cycling event on closed roads. Families and friends get to bond on a weekend that brings together thousands of cyclists from varied backgrounds. OCBC Cycle is a platform to galvanise people and communities.”
