Fiji and New Zealand Take Men’s and Women’s Titles at HSBC Sevens Rugby Singapore 2025

Last weekend saw two full action-packed days of rugby action at the Singapore Sports Hub, with the HSBC SVNS rugby taking place.

Fiji and New Zealand were crowned as men’s and women’s champions respectively.

The Black Fern Sevens defeated Australia 31-7 in the women’s final. It was an exciting game with New Zealand rushing into a 12-0 lead, thanks to tries from Michaela Brake and Risi Pouri-Lane. Australia’s Maddison Levi pulled one back before the break, but New Zealand scored three more tries in the second half to comfortably win the game.

Said New Zealand’s Viwa Naduvalo, “Thanks to my teammates for giving 100% effort. We ended up with the win.”

New Zealand are also the women’s league winners this time around, having narrowly missed out on victory last year to Australia in a dramatic winner-takes-all finale.

And in the men’s final, Fiji came from behind to triumph against surprise package Kenya to take victory.

Kenya’s Nygel Pettersan Amatisa took the lead in the first half to turn the final on its head, but favourites Fiji quickly responded in the second half with a hattrick of tries including a brace from Viwa Naduvalo and a try from Rauto Vakadranu to come away as 21-12 winners, taking the Singapore title.

Said Fiji’s Tira Wilag Patterson, “The Kenyan team was coming very hard, they are a good side and very physical. It was tough.”

After three successive tournament victories, Argentina, who were crowned yesterday as the men’s league champions, finished third in Singapore, comfortably winning the third-placed playoff against Spain 33-14. Canada took the bronze on the women’s side, with a 21-5 victory against France.

Off the pitch, there was plenty to keep families and kids entertained, with activities such as face painting, and local childhood games such as pick-up-sticks and chapteh. For those who enjoyed to drink, there was also a “beach bar” within the stadium selling alcohol and beer.

The HSBC SVNS world championships 2025 finale now takes place in Los Angeles on 3 and 4 May with the winner-takes-all season finale takes place in the Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, featuring the top eight ranked men’s and women’s teams competing to be crowned as the HSBC SVNS 2025 Champions.
