The New adidas UltraBoost 19 Promises A Game-Changing Running Experience [Review]

Set to change the future of running, the all-new adidas UltraBoost 19 is the brand’s most responsive and energy-charged running shoe to date, with 20 per cent more BOOST in the midsole to inject more energy into each step – to give runners maximum energy return for a highly responsive and game-changing running experience.

To Empower Runners Worldwide

Said Sam Handy, VP Design, adidas Running, “Running is constantly evolving, so we designed the rebooted and re-energised adidas UltraBoost 19 to empower runners all over the world to keep challenging and changing what running is and what it looks like.”

Intrigued by the premise of the shoes, the Adidas UltraBoost 19 had been a pair of shoes that was on my radar since I first heard about it in February.

Colour And Design Is Impressive

I received my pair in late March, and when I took the shoes out of the box for the first time, I thought that the colour combination and design of my unit – which is predominantly white with black tones and paired with a red heel counter, makes the shoes look both futuristic and modern at the same time. It is a design that I can see adding some ‘oomph’ to my running outfits.

Comfortable

When I slipped the shoes on, I thought that they were fairly comfortable. These are definitely a shoe that can be used right out of the box.

The one-piece PRIME KNIT 360 upper hugs my feet comfortably too, and I can immediately feel the support that it offers, when the shoes are on my feet.

And as well, I felt that the mono mesh moves along with my foot, adhering and adapting to my natural gait pattern easily.

Running With The Shoes

I have been using the adidas UltraBoost 19 for the past few weeks on a variety of my training runs – as I gear up for the London Marathon at the end of the month.

And these have ranged from long runs – with the maximum one being 2hr 20min so far, to short runs of about 30 minutes as well as tempo workouts too.

Altogether, I’ve clocked about 70km in the shoes, to date. The only sort of workout that I haven’t used them for, are my weekly track sessions because at 269 grams for the women’s version, they are not exactly the lightest running shoe around, to do my fast speed work in.

Bouncy And Responsive

And running with the adidas UltraBoost 19 shoes, I find that the extra BOOST foam makes the shoes feel quite stiff and firm during toe-off and landing – but at the same time, they are bouncy and responsive.

Together with the Torsion Spring in the mid-foot of the shoe, I could feel that the extra BOOST foam also does help to propel me forward to some extent – and with less energy required on my part, too.

The amount of bounciness, that I have been feeling from the UltraBoost 19, however, was not as much as some other running shoes that I have used recently.

Easier and Effortless Running

Nonetheless, running still feels easier and more effortless when I use the UltraBoost 19, and this difference had been especially apparent when I did a two hour morning run session with the adidas UltraBoost 19, and then that same evening, I did another 3km recovery run using a different pair of running shoes – mainly because my UltraBoost 19 shoes were wet, due to rain.

The result was that my calves could really feel the strain during the evening 3km run, whilst I had felt comfortable throughout my two-hour run whilst wearing the UltraBoost 19.

To some extent, the strain that I had felt might have been due to me running on tired legs – but then again, I have done twice-daily runs on other occasions, too, with the second run being with the adidas UltraBoost 19, and with the UltraBoost 19 on my feet, I did notice that my legs do not feel quite as tired or strained. So I can probably conclude that the shoes do have some part to play in this.

Feet Feel Slightly Warm

But I did notice that when I run in the adidas UltraBoost 19 shoes, my feet did feel a tad on the warm side.

And this is despite the shoes being made using an interwoven construction that is flexible and breathable according to adidas.

So perhaps this means that the UltraBoost 19 may not be the best choice for running in hot climates. But don’t get me wrong; they are still a comfortable pair of running shoes for me to pound the pavement with.

Overall Conclusion

As a whole, I would say that the adidas UltraBoost 19 is a pretty solid pair of multi-purpose running shoes that will set you in good stead in your long runs, as well as your mid-length and tempo sessions.

Where to get the shoes

The adidas UltraBoost 19 has a retail price of S$280 and is available at adidas stores across Singapore, that is, at Marina Bay Sands, VivoCity and Suntec, as well as online at adidas.com.sg.
