The UK-based Precision Hydration began as a simple and effective way to help athletes understand and manage their hydration needs.
How Precision Hydration began
Company co-founder, Alan Blow, who has a degree in Sport & Exercise Science, is also an athlete himself, regularly finishing on the podium in short-course triathlon.
However, his own issues with cramp and hyponatremia when racing in the heat led him to experiment with his sodium and nutrition intake, and this eventually led to the beginning of Precision Hydration.
Today, Precision Hydration provides their services to professional teams in the English Premier League, International Rugby Union, the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Formula 1 motor racing, MotoGP and Indy Car, as well as elite athletes from the worlds of cycling, running, and triathlon.
Precision Hydration and Coached
I train and run with Coached and they have been bringing in the Precision Hydration products to Singapore for a while now.
With Coached, I have bettered my personal bests along the way, at various distances ranging from the 10km to the marathon.
Introducing Precision Fuel™
Recently, with more athletes wondering about what to eat in order to stay fuelled for their races alongside taking Precision Hydration, the company have decided to venture into the fuelling business, introducing two products under the new Precision Fuel™ umbrella. These are a sports gel and an energy drink mix.
The two Precision Fuel™ products contain exactly 30 grams of carbohydrates, which makers it easy to work out how many you need to take per hour in order to fuel your race efforts for long races such as marathons and IRONMAN triathlons.
Taste and texture
Thanks to Coached, I had the chance to try the new products and to sum it up, they are surprisingly pleasant to the taste buds.
Precision Fuel™ Sports Gel
My first impression of the sports gel was that it is not as sweet as I had expected. While there is still a tinge of sweetness to it, it is a very palatable sensation and is not jelak at all.
I tried out this gel out on a 17km run, taking the gel at roughly the halfway point of my run. I did feel the gel boosting my energy levels immediately after taking it, but whether this was the placebo effect at work, I don’t know for sure. The gel didn’t cause me any stomach or digestive issues when running after taking it.
The thickness (viscosity) of the gel is just right. I can open up the packet and the gel easily slides down my throat, without the need for water. So it is not overly thick and is not watery either. I think the texture is just right.
In terms of the taste of the gel, it is pleasant, but the flavour itself is one that I am unable to place.
I would describe it as a very neutral taste and rather palatable to the taste buds, but doesn’t actually remind me of anything in particular. Precision Fuel calls it their “original” flavour.
Precision Fuel™ Energy Drink Mix
For the energy drink mix, the instructions on the packet were to mix a sachet in with 500ml of water, which I did.
In order to have my drink cold during the run, I popped the bottle into the freezer the night beforehand and brought it along with me on an 11km run.
The flavour sensation of the energy drink is rather similar to that of the gel. It is a palatable taste that is easy on the taste buds and quite pleasant to drink and swallow, but again, it does not seem to remind me of anything in particular.
In terms of the sweetness, there is still a tinge of sweetness present, but it seems to be less sweet compared to majority of the other commercial energy drinks out there on the market.
It is a rather pleasant drink that I think appears quite easy on the taste buds and stomach, over long training runs and marathon races. Unlike some other energy drink mixes I have had, this does not make you feel queasy after downing all 500ml of it.
