The Race Against Cancer (RAC) has been an annual must-do fixture on my running calendar since 2015, after my mum’s diagnosis with Glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
With the Covid-19 pandemic rearing its ugly head for the past one and a half years, this continuous streak hasn’t stopped, with this meaningful race having taken on a virtual format since 2020.
Due to the meaning behind this cause and what it represents, it is one that I will always continue to throw my support behind.
While I do miss the physical format of the race, where the cancer community can come together to support this cause, the virtual event will have to make do, until we are able to have mass gatherings again.
A total distance of 42km
Together with some of my regular running buddies, I am taking part in the virtual run, with every one of us aiming to individually complete a total distance of 42km over nine days this September.
The race dates are from 18th – 26th September.
Minimise cancer and maximise lives
Organised by Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), RAC 2021 aims to raise funds for cancer treatment subsidies, welfare assistance, cancer rehabilitation, hospice care, cancer screenings, research, public education and cancer support group initiatives.
The race aims to make a statement against cancer, to minimise cancer and maximise lives.
Cancer is pervasive in Singapore
With cancer being so pervasive in Singapore and 39 people diagnosed with cancer every day across Singapore, SCS hopes to rally participants to run and conquer the entire Singapore map to signify our connectivity, to give hope and support to the cancer community, to fight against cancer and save lives.
The 2021 race format
For the 2021 virtual format, runners can run anywhere in Singapore by using a GPS-enabled app, with Strava being the preferred choice, to track their runs.
This format is similar to the 2020 edition of the event.
