Took place this morning at Bayfront Event Space
The 2017 edition of the Run for Hope took place this morning at the Bayfront Event Space, at the Marina Bay area, with two categories, a 10km Competitive Run and a 3.5km Family Fun Run.
As more than 10,000 people are being diagnosed with cancer each year and cancer accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths in Singapore, cancer research is a worthy cause that many of the runners participating in the event – ranging from cancer survivors themselves to people whose loved ones had been diagnosed with cancer – were able to identify with.
One such participant is colon cancer survivor Bryan Ruesem, 43, who is working as an entrepreneur in the food & beverage industry, his participation in the run had been a form of closure for him.
Said Bryan, “Running for this cause means a lot to me and my family. I had an operation in November last year for colon cancer, so taking part in this meaningful race is a type of closure for me. My surgery and chemotherapy treatment went well, but on a three-monthly basis, I have to do check-ups in my blood, liver and lungs to make sure that the cancer does not come back, for the next five years. So far so good.”
Great weather and lovely scenery
He added, “And for the run itself, it was very good. There was great weather, it was not too hot, and the scenery was beautiful. The logistics and the race route were also great and I was able to keep on running without stopping; when you are in your rhythm, it is always easier to run through, and not worry about stopping and starting again. Unfortunately there were no medals given out; it would have been nice for them to have given out medals especially for the little ones – as it would have been a good memory of the race.”
No medals at the finish line
Amber Holland, 42, an HR professional in the pharmaceutical industry, shared Bryan’s sentiments about the medals. She said, “Can we suggest that they give out a medal next time? But that aside though, the run was great. The location was excellent and it was well organised, with lots of water and volunteers cheering along the way.”
Route and logistics were great
For Toni Mitchell, 48, a primary school teacher, Run For Hope was a lovely family event. He said, “I came here with my daughter and her school group. The race route and logistics were great and it was good to see the beautiful sights of Singapore City. It was also very clear where we had to run.”
Continued Toni, “I have friends who are fighting breast cancer and some of them are still battling it now, so this cause means a huge amount to us.”
Hopes that a cure for cancer can be found
For Helen Robinson, 43, a Teacher-Librarian at a primary school, it would be great if a cure for cancer could be found one day. She said, “This is a fantastic cause and I really hope that they find a cure. We have had a grandpa who passed away with liver cancer at the end of his life, even though he didn’t really drink much.”
She added, “The actual run itself was also wonderful. It was beautiful and scenic, with lots of hydration and plenty of parking spaces available.”
Some Congestion at start line
Winni Verhoef, 48, a Marketeer, however felt that the start line had been congested. He said, “It would have been great to move the start; I felt there was a bit of a hiccup at the beginning where everyone was leaving at the same time. It felt a bit cramped. But besides that, the rest of the race was great.”
Winni added, “Everything was well organised and it was easy to get here, we did a round of the Bay which had provided a great view and a lovely scenic run. The event was lots of fun and we hope to be back again to support this cause.”
