The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly disrupted the lives of everyone, including runners, who find themselves with no races to train for.
In response to Covid-19, the Malaysian government has implemented the Movement Control Order (MCO) since 18 March 2020, effectively confining Malaysians in their homes. Similar orders have been put in place elsewhere in the world to curb the Covid-19 spread.
The effect of the MCO is that Malaysians are no longer allowed to jog, let alone perform any leisure activities outside their homes.
Launching the SCORE Stay Home and Run 5K Challenge
Thus, in response to this, SCORE Sports Management Sdn Bhd, established in 2013 and is a leading player in the running event industry in Malaysia, have launched the SCORE Stay Home and Run 5K Challenge, which invites affected runners worldwide to do a 5km run in their own homes.
Inspired by Chinese marathoner Pan Shancu from Hangzhou who ran a total of 50km comprising of loops round two tables in his apartment, the SCORE Stay Home and Run 5K Challenge is sponsored by PRIME apparels and supported by Checkpoint Asia.
Mitigating the effects of Covid-19
Said Patricia Tan, SCORE Chief Executive Officer, “It’s a surprisingly fun way to do a run, but more importantly, we’re doing it responsibly, playing our part in mitigating the effects of Covid-19, on not just runners, but also, the less fortunate who are in dire need of help.”
How to participate
Runners participate by signing up for free, completing a run of 5km or more in the safety of their homes, and submitting their sports tracker results to get an e-cert and a 30% off voucher for PRIME and BROOKS apparels.
Tan and her colleagues, who are runners themselves, have done their 5km, in their car porches, around their dining tables, up and down the stairs and more.
Added Tan, “I hope to see more Malaysians signing up for this run and post it on their social media. It will inspire the running community around the world to join us in solidarity, staying fit, staying safe and staying sane at a time like this.”
