In my earlier post, I shared about the UA All Out Mile and taking a lactate test with Coached.
Training sessions at Kallang
Besides the lactate test, Under Armour, together with Coached, also organised four training sessions at the Kallang practice track to prepare running influencers for the mile.
Through the organisation of the All Out Mile, Under Armour hopes that it will help runners to maintain routine by motivating them and setting new goals.
The training actually kicked off last week, but due to short notice, I was not able to attend last week’s session.
Session begins
Wednesday’s session was my first one.
Though I have been training with Coached for some time now, but my training plan is generally focused around marathons, so I didn’t quite know what to expect with regards to this session.
The session started quite tame, with us doing three laps of the track as warmup, before going into some running drills.
Running drills
Running drills, according to Ben Pulham, founder of Coached, help to improve your strength, cadence, efficiency and form when you are running.
In the long term, they will make you a better and stronger runner.
Interval reps
After that, we went into the main set. These sets are targeted specifically towards training for a mile, which is 80 percent aerobic and 20 percent anaerobic, according to Ben.
Wednesday’s set was 200m of very hard intervals followed by 200m of recovery (easy), repeated 10 times.
The track is 400m, so this training was pretty easy to gauge – each interval is basically half a lap with the other half a lap used to recover.
Ben stresses that while very hard intervals should feel intense and solid, they are not supposed to be run at maximal effort and you should not be running to the point of puking.
For runners who had done the lactate test, Ben told us what paces we should run at in order to hit our very hard and easy zones respectively.
I definitely say that the lactate test is useful because it helps you to dial in your training with regards to such paces and zones.
Conclusion and ending
It was definitely an intense set, and I was feeling pretty breathless by the end of it.
Ten reps later, the cool down, which was two laps on the track, could not have come sooner.
