For the very first time in the history of the competition, Singapore is set to play host to the 2021 edition of the prestigious SB20 Sailing World Championships.
What Is The SB20 Sailboat
Conceptualised in 1999 as a one-design class of sailboat, the SB20 is an open-keel boat designed for racing with a crew of three to four, whose maximum weight must not exceed 270kg.
Being the largest one-design keel boat fleet in Singapore, the SB20 is the boat of choice for Singapore sailors progressing from dinghy racing to keel boat racing.
World Championship Held From 2nd To 6th February 2021
And the World Championships will be taking place at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove – which is the seven-time winner of Boating Asia Magazine’s Best Asian Marina Award – from the 2nd to the 6th of February, 2021.
Since its inauguration in 2007, the ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore has had the honour of hosting upscale International yachting events such as the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/09, the Asia Pacific Yachting Conference and is home to the Singapore Yacht Show, the third most important boat show in the world according to the Financial Times.
But the SB20 Sailing World Championships is set to be their biggest event yet though.
ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Is Excited To Be Hosts
Said Teo Joo Leng, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore General Manager, “We are very excited to be selected as the venue host for the SB20 World Championships for 2021, which is one of the most prestigious competitions in the annual sailing calendar. This successful bid would not have been possible without the strong support and advocacy efforts of our partners – the Singapore SB20 Association, Singapore Sailing Federation and the Singapore Tourism Board.”
And he continued, “Through the years, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore has consistently supported the sea-sports community as part of our corporate mission to make it part of the lifestyle offerings at the marina. We will continue to explore more opportunities and events that will raise the profile of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore as a unique and exclusive hub for such activities.”
Over 70 Teams To Compete
More than 70 boats and teams hailing from the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Portugal, Australia, Ireland and Italy, amongst others, will descend upon ONE°15 Marina for the event in about two years’ time.
And as well, Singapore will also be sending more than 15 teams, all comprising some of the nation’s top sailors, to participate in this world class event.
How Singapore Won The Bid
According to Nicholas Cocks, who is the Singapore SB20 Association Fleet Vice Captain, Singapore’s successful hosting of four SB20 ASIA PACIFIC Championships between the years of 2015 and 2019 had played a key role in the nation’s winning bid to host the 2021 SB20 Sailing World Championships.
He explained, “The tripartite alliance made up of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore, the Singapore SB20 Association and the Singapore Sailing Federation had put in a very convincing bid and we are delighted that the SB20 World Council, at their meeting in December 2018, selected ours as the winning submission.”
And Cocks added “Sailing has become increasingly popular in Singapore and playing host to a World Championship event will definitely give the profile of the sport, a boost both locally and in the region.”
