IRONMAN Asia, the organisers of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM), have announced a two year partnership with Singapore Athletics Association (SAA). This partnership will see SAA continue to sanction the SCSM, the region’s only International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Gold Label Race.
At a grassroots level, SCSM 2017 and 2018 will also double up as the host event for the marathon distance at the National Championships, where the top local runners across the Singapore Open and Masters Male and Female categories will compete against the best in Singapore to be crowned National Champions.
Move in the right direction
Said Ho Mun Cheong, SAA President, “This partnership is a move in the right direction and will further elevate the sport of distance running among competitive runners in Singapore. By hosting the National Championships at a platform like SCSM, our top Singaporean runners will get the experience of what it is like to compete amongst the elites at a world class event, while vying for the honour of being crowned National Champion.”
To develop Singapore as a premiere running destination
Added Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of IRONMAN Asia, the organisers of the SCSM, “This is part of our commitment to developing Singapore as a premiere running destination. The race is already seen by local and regional runners as the gold standard, so by working with SAA to host the National Championships here, we are hoping to develop SCSM further as a race for those with a competitive edge.”
Several Team Singapore athletes have confirmed participation
Team Singapore athletes who have confirmed their participation include Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy Winner Ashley Liew, top runners Evan Chee, Jasmine Goh, Neo Jie Shi and Fang Jian Yong.
Partnership welcomed by Mok Ying Ren
The partnership was also welcomed by Mok Ying Ren, one of Singapore’s top marathoners and a seven-time SCMS Singapore Men’s Champion. He said “We have had the SCSM for several years now, and many of us have run this race growing up. The event has grown in both scale and quality, so hosting the National Championship here makes sense. It will strike a chord with competitive runners in Singapore. I am confident that it would be an opportunity for a finer display of local sportsmanship and emergence of more young local talent.”
Enhanced route experience for runners
Participants at SCSM will enjoy the enhanced route experience and compete across new race categories, taking them through some of Singapore’s most iconic heritage locations.
There will also be new features en route, such as mist tunnels, cooling zones, additional and longer hydration points and more entertainment, for an improved running experience.
